Federer, Serena aim to advance on Wimbledon’s ‘Manic Monday’

Federer, Serena aim to advance on Wimbledon’s ‘Manic Monday’”

Federer's progression to the last-eight saw him extend his Open Era record for the most quarter-finals reached at Wimbledon, which he set past year.

The 32-year-old, who recently clinched his eleventh Roland Garros title in Paris, will next face Czech player Jiri Vesely to book his berth in the quarter-final of the Championship.

Eight-time champion Federer will be playing in his 53rd Grand Slam last-eight when he tackles either Gael Monfils of France or Kevin Anderson, the eighth-seeded South African.

Wimbledon's top seed only needed one and a comfortable hold of serve saw Federer win his 31st consecutive set in SW19 and take control of the match.

Roger Federer is in the fourth round of Wimbledon. The only consolation for the 22nd-seeded Mannarino was that he became the first player to earn a break point on Federer's serve during the tournament.

And one court over on the opposite end?

The 17-time Grand Slam champion is playing his first tournament since winning an 11th French Open title last month after pulling out of Queen's - a move which appears to be paying dividends.

Bertens hit seven aces and saved eight of the 10 break points she faced to win 6-3, 7-6 (2) and complete the latest upset in the women's draw.

Mannarino, the world number 26, must have been fearing the worst as Federer had three breaks points in the first game of the second set but the Swiss veteran proved he is human after all with two uncharacteristic errors to allow his opponent to hold.

When Mannarino found himself 0-40 at the start of the second set, the Centre Court crowd, normally one of the most pro-Federer anywhere in the world, began roaring for the Frenchman in the desperate hope a tennis match might break out.

The Latvian player also reached the quarterfinals previous year in her best Wimbledon showing, losing to eventual runner-up Venus Williams.

Leading 5-4 and two points away from taking the first set at 0-30 on Hsieh's serve, Cibulkova struck a backhand onto the baseline that was called out. "I can only really practice it with my coach".

"Novak (Djokovic) and Rafa (Nadal), all these guys are still in the draw", he said.
