General BREAKING: Hierro leaves Spain coaching role 5 hours ago”

Fernando Hierro is cutting all ties with the Spain setup.

A statement said the former Real Madrid player had "declined" to return to his previous role and has opted to "undertake new professional challenges".

Hierro, 50, has chose to "seek new horizons", according to the Spanish football federation (RFEF).

A last-minute 3-3 draw in the opening match against Portugal - with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring a fantastic free-kick in the last moments of the game - and a 2-2 draw with Morocco ultimately saw Spain underachieve despite gaining qualification from Group B.

The 50-year-old has now also opted againt returning to his post as director at the RSFF.

"After two stints as the federation sporting director, the first one between 2007 and 2011 - which was the best era of the senior national team, when it won the European Championship under Luis Aragones as coach in 2008 and the 2010 World Cup with Vicente del Bosque - and a second stint from November 2007 until now".

"The Federation want to highlight the professional and human values of an extraordinary athlete to whom we wish the best of fortunes".

Former Barcelona coach Luis Enrique is to be named as the new Spain coach, according to widespread reports in the Spanish media on Monday.

Spain's interim coach Fernando Hierro has cut his ties with the Spanish Football Federation following the team's disastrous exit from the World Cup last week, the organisation said on Sunday.

Lopetegui's decision to have accepted Real Madrid job masterminded the rationale for him to have been axed by the Spanish Football Federation chiefs.
