Lebanese tourist sentenced to eight years for FB post against Egypt”

Mona el-Mazbouh was arrested at Cairo airport at the end of her stay in Egypt after she published a 10-minute video on her Facebook page, laced with vulgarity and profanity against Egypt and Egyptians. The Egyptian court said that the video "deliberately broadcast false rumours which aim to undermine society and attack religions", according to state news source Al-Ahram.

The Lebanese woman, identified as 24-year-old Mona al-Mazbouh, was arrested in late May and referred to a criminal court in early June for an urgent trial over her offensive remarks.

He also said that he hopes that the Egyptian authorities would look beyond his daughter's mistake given her young age and naivety.

The arresting of the Lebanese woman came in line with an official complaint issued by lawyer Amr Abdel Salam accusing Al-Mazbouh with insulting Egyptians, the state and the president, since her video included foul language.

Mazbouh eventually posted another an apology and deleted the offending video.

She was then sentenced to eight years in prison.

'God willing, the verdict will change. Also using curses, she railed against what she described as the country's deteriorating public services and unchallenged sexual harassment.

The Facebook post went viral on social media prompting her arrest.

'It is in the context of the law, but the court was applying the maximum penalty'.

The attorney-general chose to refer the accused al-Mazbouh to an urgent criminal trial for deliberately broadcasting rumors that would harm the community; this is in addition to her producing content considered a disgrace to public modesty through her Facebook page.

The court's decision will still be appealed on July 29.

Meanwhile, el-Mazboh's lawyer, Emad Kamal, says that his client has medical documentation that shows she is unable to control her anger after a brain surgery in 2006.

A final reading of the bill has yet to take place before it's ratified by the president.
