Samsung opens world's largest smartphone factory in India to boost production”

About 30 per cent of all phones made in the new unit will be exported, the PM said, adding how this highlighted the blend of Korean technology and Indian manufacturing.

One of the first electronics manufacturing facilities set up in the country in the early 1990s, the plant started by manufacturing TVs in 1997.

Speaking on the occasion, Narendra Modi stated that technology has transformed human lives in India.

"This is a significant departure from Korea's traditional foreign policy", the article noted, adding that, "It is partly a hedging strategy amid the US-China tug-of-war in the region, and partly a forward-looking move to address how Korea and India can together meet the demands of a dynamic future". Modi categorically said that the new plant will help firming up India's position in global market.

The Prime Minister also took the opportunity to list the achievements in the digital sector and said that these developments indicate that "Digital Revolution" has arrived in India.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Adityanath said India and South Korea have a strong trade and cultural relationship and invited new ventures to invest in the state. Ties were then elevated to "special strategic partnership" with Modi seeking South Korean investments in many flagship programmes of the government including "Skill India" and "Make in India".

A year ago in June, Samsung has announced a massive Rs 4,915 crore investment to expand the Noida plant. In 2003, refrigerator production began.

By 2012, Samsung became the market leader in mobile phones in the country and the Noida facility rolled out the first-ever "Galaxy S3" device.

The logo of Samsung is seen on a building during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain February 25, 2018.

Samsung's new facility will not only help in mobile manufacturing but also double its production capacity of consumer electronics like refrigerators and flat-panel televisions - which will further consolidate the company's leadership in these segments, according to the reports. More than 10 percent of its total production now takes place in India - but that figure could rise to 50 percent within the next three years if everything goes to plan.
