Starbucks, citing environment, is ditching plastic straws

Starbucks, citing environment, is ditching plastic straws”

The company said it is the largest food and beverage retailer to make such a commitment-a decision that will eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws per year from its stores. The ban will eventually be global at all of its 28,000 stores. "Metal straws can be unsafe for people with neurological conditions such as Parkinson's whereas reusable plastic straws present hygiene concerns to people with specific health conditions".

Starbucks joins companies, cities, and countries around the world that have banned plastic straws.

The global coffee giant said that it plans to eliminate all single-use plastic straws by 2020, and will instead cap cold drinks with lids that do not require the use of a straw. Some offer more environmentally friendly alternatives, such as straws made of paper, bamboo, steel, even Twizzlers.

Other cities, like Fort Meyers, have banned plastic straws. Similar proposals are being considered elsewhere, including NY and San Francisco.

WATCH: Plastic straw ban?

Starbucks is among several major companies that have announced measures to cut plastic waste.

Starbucks will begin rolling out the new lids for all drinks this fall, starting with stores in Vancouver, Canada, and Seattle.

Straws made with alternative materials like paper and compostable plastic will be provided with Frappuccinos, as well as upon request by customers. They essentially look like sippy cup lids - regular plastic lids with a raised and slanted mouthpiece for customers to drink from.

The announcement from McDonald's followed an April proposal by the United Kingdom government to ban plastic straws in the country. Straws add up to about 2,000 tons of the almost 9 million tons of plastic waste that ends up in waters around the globe each year.
