Starbucks to ban plastic straws worldwide by 2020

Starbucks to ban plastic straws worldwide by 2020”

The changes will help Starbucks (SBUX) eliminate more than 1 billion plastic straws per year, the company said.

The coffee company announced Monday that it'll offer a strawless lid or straws made of paper or compostable material instead.

The move echoes a trend of companies and cities attempting to move away from single-use plastic straws, which can be detrimental to the environment and take an estimated 450 years to decompose.

Starting this fall Starbucks customers in Seattle and Vancouver will be the first to receive the strawless lids, with phased rollouts in the USA and Canada coming in fiscal year 2019.

Starbucks said the new strawless lids will first be implemented in Seattle and Vancouver in the third quarter of this year.

For some Starbucks drinkers, the companys new strawless lid may look familiar. Seattle, where Starbucks is headquartered, implemented a ban on single-use plastic straws and utensils last week; Fort Myers Beach, Fla., has also ditched straws, while NY and San Francisco are considering similar proposals.

Similar proposals are being considered elsewhere, including in NY and San Francisco. It will become the standard for all iced coffee, tea and espresso beverages. Starbucks said it has committed more than $10 million to this initiative so far.

McDonald's also said last month that it would replace plastic straws with paper ones in the United Kingdom and Ireland from September. And straws contribute only 2,000 tons to the nearly nine million tons of plastic waste that wind up in the water annually, according to the Associated Press.

The effort to reduce waste is part of a partnership with the World Wildlife Fund's Cascading Materials Vision program, the statement said. "We hope others will follow in [Starbucks'] footsteps".

In order to eliminate straws, Starbucks will begin transitioning its flat plastic lids to recyclable plastic lids that feature a raised lip that you can drink from.
