Tropical Storm Chris likely to strengthen into a hurricane Monday”

A man died in the rough surf in Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina, on Saturday, when Chris was still a tropical depression. While Tropical Storm Chris is not expected to directly impact land over the next few days, rough surf and risky rip currents will continue to impact coastal areas of the Carolinas, mid-Atlantic and the Northeast through much of this week.

As of 5 p.m. Sunday, Chris remained stationary and was not expected to move in the next few days.

Canada's national forecaster says the Maritimes could be in the path of a tropical storm that formed off the US coast Sunday morning.

As for Beryl it has lose its circulation and tropical characteristics making it just a remnant low with winds of 45 miles per hour and gust up to 60 miles per hour. Meteorologists said the swells can result in life-threatening surf and rip current conditions.

A tropical storm warning is in effect for Dominica and Guadeloupe, while a tropical storm watch is in effect for Martinique, St. Martin, St. Barthelemy, Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Maarten.

It however warned that "pockets of moderate to heavy showers and occasional gusty winds are still possible" with rainfall accumulations of one to two inches with isolated higher amounts.

Beryl is expected to increase its forward speed, forecasters said, adding they expect the storm to gradually weaken in the next 36 hours and become a low pressure system "as its moves across the the Lesser Antilles and into the eastern Caribbean Sea by Monday".

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from the center. It is now a minimal tropical storm, with peak winds of 40 miles per hour.

Tropical storm watches were in effect for Barbados, St. Lucia and Dominica.

Puerto Rico, which was devastated by Hurricane Maria in September, remains under a state of emergency.
