UK's Brexit Secretary David Davis has resigned

UK's Brexit Secretary David Davis has resigned”

From the moment she became prime minister, May has insisted that "Brexit means Brexit", and denied all attempts to push Britain towards a softer interpretation of the referendum result. His replacement will be announced shortly.

Opposition lawmakers, meanwhile, said that this was a big blow for the prime minister.

David Davis said his resignations lead to the public starting to pressure the Government into stopping conceding points to the European Union during Brexit talks.

A long-time eurosceptic, Davis was appointed two years ago to head up the newly-created Department for Exiting the European Union after Britain voted to leave the European Union in a historic referendum.

In his resignation letter, Mr Davis criticised the PM's Brexit plan - agreed by the cabinet on Friday - saying it would leave Parliament with "at best a weak negotiating position".

Asked whether Mr Raab was signed up in full to the plan agreed at Chequers, Mrs May's official spokesman told reporters: "The Government's position was agreed on Friday".

After many months of rumours that he would pull the plug, David Davis has actually quit as Brexit Secretary.

"May's Brexit means BRINO - "Brexit In Name Only" - a fake Brexit", said John Longworth, co-chairman of Leave Means Leave. "The prime minister can't deliver Brexit and has zero authority left".

Guy Verhofstadt, the European Parliament's chief Brexit coordinator, said he had enjoyed working with Davis and that he hoped Britain would unite "around a position to conclude a broad Association Agreement with the EU".

The vast majority of Tory MPs, although far from happy with the current state of May's government, are not yet convinced that the solution is to replace the prime minister. He has been a strong pro-Brexit voice in a Cabinet divided between supporters of a clean break with the bloc and those who want to keep close ties.

In one of the most tumultuous periods in recent British political history, there have been four major elections in the past four years: the Scottish independence referendum of 2014, the 2015 United Kingdom election, the 2016 Brexit referendum and the snap election called by May last year.

For many Brexit campaigners, Baker's government role gave them faith in the process.

But Davis had expressed his unease over a compromise plan right up until the eve of the meeting, writing a letter to May describing her proposal to ease trade and give Britain more freedom to set tariffs as "unworkable".

On Friday night she appeared to have persuaded hardline Brexiteers in the Cabinet, including Davis, to back her plan. Conservative MPs have repeatedly told Business Insider that there is likely to be a challenge against her once Brexit negotiations conclude and Britain has left the European Union next March.

May is due to meet her lawmakers later on Monday.
