Eight boys rescued from flooded Thai caves, now up to 'rain god'

Eight boys rescued from flooded Thai caves, now up to 'rain god'”

Four boys out of 12 trapped in a flooded cave in Thailand with their soccer coach have been freed as part of an ongoing rescue mission that started Sunday after the group was initially found July 2-about a week after the search for them began.

Another operation commander said on Sunday the rescue efforts could take several days to complete, with the boys and their coach being brought out one-by-one.

Ms Bishop said the Australian contingent had been integral in the first stage of the rescue mission, with the eight remaining boys and their soccer coach still in the cave waiting to be extracted.

But he added rescuers may need more than 20 hours, to replan and replenish oxygen supplies, to be ready to mount the next mission.

Officials said the boys are healthy but have not provided details on their condition. "When they're deprived of light and their comfort issues from home there can be psychological sequelae that have to be addressed, and we've seen that before with people who have been held hostage or in kind of hard environmental situations", Ashton said, referring to the medical term for the after effects of a traumatic incident. "And it is up to the environment".

But in today's tweets, Musk made clear that he wouldn't consider the effort wasted even if it doesn't come into play in the flooded Thai cave. "But if the rain god doesn't help, then it could be challenging".

Also Monday, Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha visited the cave for the first time since the extraction operation began. "We should learn from this experience to prevent it from happening again".

The boys, ages 11-16, and their 25-year-old coach became stranded when they went exploring in the cave after a practice game.

"Football's Coming Home. First Wild Boars Out", a headline on one online Thai paper said on Monday, referring to a song chanted by English soccer fans at the World Cup now underway in Russian Federation.

The death Friday of a former Thai navy SEAL, Saman Gunan, underscored the risks.

A team of Thai Navy SEAL divers reached the boys yesterday, and will guide them out four at a time using a guide rope and oxygen tanks. The diver, the first fatality of the rescue effort, was working in a volunteer capacity and died on a mission to place oxygen canisters along the route.

Less than an hour after the helicopter took off, Thai public television aired live video of a medivac helicopter landing close to a hospital in the city of Chiang Rai, around 60 kilometers (37 miles) from the cave.

"The rescue has been enormous", said volunteer helper Somjit Saenset, 56. "I want to say thanks for all the support and I want to apologize to the parents", he wrote.

Now, it could take up to four days to rescue the rest of the team and their coach, weather permitting.

"They are now at the field hospital near the cave", Tossathep Boonthong, chief of the health department in Chiang Rai in northern Thailand, told Reuters earlier.

Medical teams previously said concerns included hypothermia and an airborne lung infection known as "cave disease", which is caused by bat and bird droppings. It had been feared that sustained heavy rain could raise water levels inside the cave, greatly hindering the rescue operation.

"We have not been told which child has been brought out ..."

"Our operation was more successful than we expected", Narongsak Osatanakorn - who is the Governor of Chiang Rai province and head of the joint command centre coordinating the rescue - said at a press briefing on Sunday.

"I'm hoping for good news".
