Jeremy Wright QC appointed as Digital Secretary

Jeremy Wright QC appointed as Digital Secretary”

West Suffolk MP Mr Hancock was appointed secretary of state for digital, culture, media and sport in January, having served as minister of state for digital since 2016.

A Downing Street spokesman said: "The Queen has been pleased to approve the appointment of Jeremy Hunt as Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs".

The government of British Prime Minister Theresa May has been plunged into turmoil with the resignation of two senior Cabinet ministers, exposing a deep and perilous split over her Brexit strategy.

Johnson's ministerial resignation followed that of former Brexit secretary David Davis (who was replaced by fellow Brexit campaigner Dominic Raab) and Steve Baker. It's also just hours since Brexit Secretary David Davis quit in protest over May's efforts to keep Britain closely bound to the European Union after the split, due in March.

The former management consultant was an ardent backer of Remain during the 2016 European Union referendum, warning that Brexit could "harm the NHS".

In her reply Mrs May said that if he could not support the Government's position, "it is right that you should step down".

He said in his letter that May's plan to keep close economic ties with the bloc mean the United Kingdom was heading for a "semi-Brexit" that would leave Britain with the "status of colony" within the EU.

"It seems to me we're giving too much away, too easily, and that's a unsafe strategy at this time", Davis said in a BBC radio interview Monday morning.

Leading proponents of Brexit called on her to abandon the deal struck with the Cabinet last Friday at Chequers, her country retreat outside London.

If Davis's resignation rattled May, Johnson's shook the foundations of her government.

But in parliament, her words suggested she had chose to face down the dissenters rather than change her plans.

May's supporters worry that more ministers could resign, and pro-Brexit lawmakers from her Conservative Party could trigger a no-confidence vote in the prime minister.

Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said the government was incapable of delivering Brexit.
