May seeks unity amid chaos over Brexit plans

May seeks unity amid chaos over Brexit plans”

But leading pro-Brexit legislator Jacob Rees-Mogg said "I don't think a no-confidence vote is immediately in the offing". They also argued that the proposals breach several of the "red lines" the government had set out, including a commitment to leave the EU's tariff-free customs union.

"It takes 48 Conservative members out of a total of 60 to trigger a leadership challenge; however, we are unlikely to see the challenge happen because there is not yet the belief that they have the numbers to effectively oust Theresa May", Hoez added. "In my view the inevitable outcome of the proposed policies will be to make the supposed control by Parliament illusory rather than real".

Boris Johnson is now the firm favourite to be the next prime minister after dramatically quitting Theresa May's cabinet this afternoon. As I said then, the government now has a song to sing.

Government unity began to fray within hours.

Minutes after Johnson quit, May defended her Brexit plan to lawmakers in the House of Commons - with Johnson absent from his usual place on the Conservative front bench.

"In his resignation letter, Davis said the "'common rule book policy hands control of large swathes of our economy to the European Union and is certainly not returning control of our laws in any real sense". In what amounted to a declaration of political war, Johnson said May's vision of a close future relationship with the European Union would confine the United Kingdom to a "status of colony" and amounted merely to a "semi-Brexit". The timetable looks increasingly optimistic, but European Commission spokesman Margaritis Schinas said the EU was "available 24/7".

While other senior ministers rallied round her after the resignations which left Westminster reeling on Monday, rumblings of discontent among rank and file lawmakers remained.

"I was elected to represent my constituents and the Prime Minister's team needs to be aware that backbench MPs won't sit idly by and allow a so-called "soft Brexit" with us being half-in, half-out", Andrea Jenkyns wrote in The Daily Telegraph.

Why so many resignations at once?

Johnson called it an "absolute stinker" of a deal, and said that defending it is like "polishing a turd". A "responsible government" has to prepare for a variety of outcomes in the negotiations, "including a no deal".

Labour MP Andrew Adonis said Raab's appointment could spell the "death" of the Tory leader, while writer and editor Hitcham Yezza said Brexit has now become even more "shambolic". She did not immediately name a replacement for Johnson.

Some Conservative Party lawmakers warned they would not tolerate a betrayal of Brexit.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn said Mrs May should make way for a Labour administration if her Government can not get its act together quickly.

May was asked by an opposition lawmaker Monday whether she would contest a vote of confidence if one came rather than resign. Calling the Chequers deal an "opening bid" in talks with the European Union, he said he is anxious about the potential for "further concessions on immigration, or that we might end up effectively paying for access to the single market". "But I'm getting on with delivering what the British people want".
