Netflix's 'smart downloads' cue up your next offline episode automatically

Netflix's 'smart downloads' cue up your next offline episode automatically”

Netflix is rolling out a new "smart downloads" feature created to make offline viewing just a little bit easier. The feature will only be available initially on Android phones and tablets, and is focused on episodic series, not movies or specials.

Sadly there's still no one-stop option to download an entire season of a show, so if you're stocking up on episodes for a long flight, or a trip out somewhere with poor mobile coverage, you'll still need to do it manually. The new feature will have your smartphone or tablet automatically delete an episode of a TV series once you've watched it, and quietly download the next episode of that series in the background.

"Whenever possible, we want Netflix to do the work for you", said Cameron Johnson, director of product innovation at Netflix. Called "smart downloads", the tool is meant to help users manage the Netflix content on their devices.

The feature is part of an update to Netflix's Android mobile app this week.

Smart Downloads can be turned off straight from the app's settings if you like.

Netflix resisted downloads for years, banking on the idea that streaming accessibility would eventually reach the point that downloading to watch offline wouldn't be necessary anymore. But obviously, you must stop by a WiFi hotspot in order to make everything happen. Smart downloads does that automatically. Control of the new feature still lies with the user, as-should you choose to do so-you can turn it off and enjoy downloads the old-fashioned and inherently more annoying way too. This way, it won't be using up your phone's storage and you will be able to continue watching your show when you don't have internet.

For now, the feature is limited to TV shows.
