Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on course for inevitable conclusion

Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal on course for inevitable conclusion”

Eight-time champion Federer needed just 16 minutes to win the opening set on his way to a 6-0, 7-5, 6-4 defeat of France's Adrian Mannarino to reach his 16th All England Club quarterfinal.

The 32-year-old Spaniard is the top-ranked player in the world and just won his record-extending 11th French Open.

In what turned out to be a playful Twitter banter between Wimbledon and ICC, Australia batsman Steve Smith was displaced as the world's best batsman by the world's no 1 ranked tennis player.

Novak Djokovic celebrates winning the fourth round match against Karen Khachanov.

Fans will be hoping that he can meet another sentimental favourite Roger Federer in the final after he dispatched Adrian Mannarino in straight sets.

"His consistency, the way he plays such great tennis week in and week out", said Anderson. "Facing Roger again will be something fantastic". "You can't plan for them anyway because one point can change the outcome of a set. That's the point. It's about being smart, no?"

On No. 1 Court, three-time champion Novak Djokovic faces Karen Khachanov of Russian Federation.

"The last couple of games I couldn't really see the ball very clearly, it was getting very dark... so I had to hang in there".

The action has continued on day eight at Wimbledon, aka "Manic Monday" with Serena Williams powering her way past fellow tennis mum Evgeniya Rodina while Rafael Nadal accounted for Jiri Vesely to make the first quarter-finals at the tournament for the first time in seven years.

It's the first time Isner, 33, has reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals, and it is just his second quarterfinal at a major.

Although the two have never met on grass, Nishikori is still hamstrung by the knowledge that the last of his two wins against the Serb was in 2014 in a memorable semifinal victory at the US Open.

The Frenchman was not embarrassed in the third set either as Federer settled for a single break of serve to close out the match.

The 32-year-old is yet to drop a set in this summer's tournament, having also defeated Dudi Sela, Mikhail Kukushkin and Alex de Minaur in straight sets.

"I didn't miss much so I was very happy with the match", the eight-times champion said after booking a last-eight date with South African Kevin Anderson. He edged Gael Monfils 7-6 (4), 7-6 (2), 5-7, 7-6 (4), to whom he held a 0-5 head-to-head record entering the match.

Roger Federer will be playing in his 53rd Grand Slam last 8. Federer, meanwhile, has a clearer path, with no major champions standing between him and the final.

The victor of that clash will take on either Japan's 24th seed Kei Nishikori or unseeded Ernests Gulbis.

Djokovic's run to the Queen's final on the eve of Wimbledon was his first appearance in a championship match since Eastbourne nearly 12 months earlier.

Next up for Nadal is either Juan Martin del Potro, the fifth seeded Argentine, or unseeded Gilles Simon of France. "I probably won't have another 6-0 set this week, so I'll enjoy this one".
