UK PM May seeks unity amid chaos over Brexit plans

UK PM May seeks unity amid chaos over Brexit plans”

"The Chequers Car Crash crosses Theresa May's own red lines, it certainly fails Labour's six tests and it is a million miles away from the kind of Brexit people thought they were getting - whether they voted Leave or Remain in 2016".

After cracking heads last week, she managed to pull together a compromise that united most of cabinet but just two days later, she was hit by the resignation of Brexit negotiator David Davis, two junior cabinet ministers and now foreign secretary Boris Johnson. He said "the Brexit dream is dying, suffocated by needless self doubt".

Downing Street confirmed on Monday morning that the PM has appointed 44-year-old housing minister Dominic Raab as the new Brexit Secretary following Davis' resignation on Sunday evening.

British and European Union officials are hoping to strike a deal on the terms of Britain´s withdrawal and agree to a plan for future trade ties in time for an European Union summit in October.

Johnson said in his letter that May's plan to keep close economic ties with the bloc means Britain is heading for a "semi Brexit" that would leave Britain with the "status of a colony" of the EU.

The two resignations have left May badly exposed and raised questions over whether she will stand firm in her commitment to pursuing a "business-friendly" Brexit, or will be faced with more resignations and calls to quit herself.

But it soon began to unravel when Davis resigned late on Sunday and launched a no-holds-barred attack on her plan, calling it "dangerous" and one which would give "too much away, too easily" to European Union negotiators, who would simply ask for more.

May´s Conservative opponents could trigger a confidence vote against her if at least 48 MPs support it, but to actually force her from office 159 MPs would have to vote against her - a figure hardliners may not be able to reach. Jacob Rees-Mogg, who leads a bloc of Brexit-supporting Conservative MPs in Parliament, urged May to give up on the plan.

He went on to explain how the current political turmoil in Britain will work to the EU's advantage in Brexit negotiations.

May told Parliament in a heated session that her plan was "not a betrayal" of the referendum vote.

David had become unnerved by the Brexit plan agreed by Theresa May's cabinet during the week.

Under her proposal, a treaty would be signed committing the UK to "continued harmonisation" with EU rules - avoiding friction at the UK-EU border, including Northern Ireland.

If she refuses to change course, she could face a leadership challenge.

European Council President Donald Tusk said Monday that "the mess caused by Brexit is the biggest problem in the history of EU-UK relations and it is still very far from being resolved".
