US will reunite only half of migrant children by Tuesday deadline

US will reunite only half of migrant children by Tuesday deadline”

Two weeks have passed since President Donald Trump signed an executive order to end his administration's policy of separating undocumented immigrant children and parents, but chaos still reigns at the border and across the country as family reunification has hit roadblocks.

The hearing only covered the roughly 100 children under the age of 5 who were separated from their parents under the administration's "zero tolerance" border prosecution policy.

"I am encouraged by the progress", Judge Sabraw said. He said that he was pleased with the efforts being made to reunite families, even if it proves impossible for some to be done by the deadline, suggesting it is unlikely the government will be accused of violating the court order. According to government attorneys, nine have parents who have already been deported, while an additional nine have parents that have been released from government custody in the United States.

Now, one day before a Tuesday deadline, the administration says authorities expect to return just over half of the kids - but that they will need more time to figure out the rest.

And why did the government say they can't meet the deadline?

It was the first time the government indicated whether the parents and children would be released or detained together. While parents were prosecuted, children were placed in the custody of the Health and Human Services Department in facilities dotted across the country.

This comes as the Trump administration appears set to fail in plans to reunite even half of children under 5 with their families before Tuesday's court-ordered deadline.

During the June 27th ruling, the Judge stated that "Measures were not in place to provide for communication between governmental agencies responsible for detaining parents and those responsible for housing children, or to provide for ready communication between separated parents and children".

That brings us to an update provided by the government on Monday about the 102 children under the age of 5 identified as having been separated from their parents.

"ICE will assume custody and then release the parent and child together", she said.

Six of the 102 children are not eligible for reunification because they have a parent with a criminal history or were separated from someone who is not their parent.

After the Justice Department asked for a blanket extension, Sabraw ordered the government to turn over a list of the minor children under 5 years old to the ACLU, which it did over the weekend.

In particularly, he said, parents who've already been released into the USA and disappeared could be found.

Four children were identified for release to a sponsor other than their mother or father, but the government and ACLU are working to determine whether the parent wants them to be reunited instead, the government attorney said.

I think what the hearing on Friday and today revealed is what a lot of people suspected, that there really wasn't a proper tracking system for these families and the government is now pulling information from a variety of sources and that's one of the reasons why the reunifications are taking so long. As for the rest, she claimed, three were brought by someone who is not their biological parent, three have parents with serious criminal records that bar reunification, five have parents with something on their record that requires further investigation, 12 have parents either in local or federal criminal detention who must serve time before being transferred to ICE, 18 have parents who were lost by the administration after their deportation or release into the USA, and four have been approved for release to a non-parent sponsor. But as government employees would soon realize, they had their work cut out for them.
