Iranian teen detained for Instagram dancing videos”

Iranian Instagram celebrity and dancer Maedeh Hojabri would have been just another teenager in most parts of the world: operating multiple social media accounts and uploading videos of herself dancing.

Her arrest has prompted many to fear that the Iranian government will shut down Instagram, as authorities have reported a crackdown on popular accounts, according to the Guardian.

In what appeared to be a coerced confession on July 6, Hojabri reportedly said she only produced the video to gain more internet followers. I did not have any intention to encourage others doing the same ...

Iranian human rights advocate Reza Pahlavi said Hojbari's only crime was her want to be free to live. The 18-year-old gymnast was detained after she was seen dancing to pop music in her bedroom and was not wearing a headscarf, which is required in the country.

Captioning the video, he writes: 'If you tell people anywhere in the world that girls aged 17 and 18 are arrested due to their beauty, the joy of dance and accused of the crime of prostitution, and predators of children are free, they will laugh!

"I'm dancing so that they (the authorities) see and know that they can not take away our happiness and hope by arresting teenagers and (girls like) Maedeh", the BBC translated the tweet of one supporter. "I did not work with a network", a crying Hojabri told TV on Friday. "I only do gymnastics".

Iranian blogger and freedom of speech activist Hossein Ronaghi re-posted one of Ms Hojabri's videos on Twitter.

Iranian football supporters wave their national flags as they cheer for their national team during a screening of the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup Group B football match between Iran and Spain in Azadi stadium in the capital Tehran, June 20, 2018.

Instagram is the only widely used social media app that hasn't been banned in Iran. But more importantly, she is a courageous great warrior against the barbaric regime who took a nation in hostage.

Women in Iran have been protesting against Iran's strict modesty laws for years now through dance.

In February, several women removed their headscarves and waved them like flags while standing on public platforms.

The three men and three women were later sentenced to suspended jail time and lashes.

Earlier this year, an official was arrested after footage emerged showing men and women dancing at a mall in the city, while six people were arrested for Zumba dancing in August last year.
