May clings to power amid Brexit resignation turmoil”

Brexit secretary David Davis quit on Sunday following crunch talks at Chequers, saying the agreed trade position for the white paper meant "we are giving too much away too easily and that's a unsafe strategy at this time".

Theresa May has been strengthened by the resignations of Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson and Brexit Secretary David Davis over her Brexit plan, a Welsh member of her government says.

In her reply Mrs May said she was sorry, and "a little surprised", at his decision but that if he could not support the Government's position, "it is right that you should step down". The British leader may have quelled talk of a leadership challenge, but some Conservative Brexit supporters are still incensed over what they see as her breach of a promise of a clean break with the EU.

Mr Johnson does not pull any punches, saying Brexit "should be about opportunity and hope" and a "chance to do things differently", but "that dream is dying, suffocated by needless self-doubt".

If she lost the vote, she would not be able to stand in the subsequent leadership contest, arranged by Sir Graham. We have to deliver Brexit or we will be punished at the polls at the next general election. "And we look forward to seeing greater detail in the UK's White Paper later this week", the spokesperson said.

"I think there will be more give and take but I'm not underestimating the challenges".

"Everybody who wants to be the prime minister wants Theresa May to guide that process through until March so that (they) could take over and say "what's passed is passed".

"May is fighting for her survival", Mujtaba Rahman, a managing director at Eurasia Group, said in a research note.

US President Donald Trump, asked about the unfolding drama ahead of his visit to Britain later this week, said it appeared "in somewhat turmoil".

Trump, answering a reporter's question about whether May would stay in power, said: "That's up to the people".

"Unfortunately his contribution to the development of bilateral ties with Russian Federation was rather modest, to put it mildly", President Vladimir Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

Hunt, the MP for South West Surrey, has served as Health Secretary since 2012.

Hunt said it was a moment to show that Britain remained a "strong, confident voice in the world".

The prominent Brexiteer has stepped down in protest at the Prime Minister Theresa May's plans to retain close ties with the European Union after Brexit. She said: "On Friday at Chequers our cabinet agreed a comprehensive and ambitious proposal that provides a responsible and credible basis for regressing negotiations with the European Union towards a new relationship after we leave on the 29 March next year".

Both sides hope to strike a deal on Brexit withdrawal terms and agree a plan for future trade ties in time for an European Union summit in October, ahead of Britain's departure from the bloc on Mar 29, 2019.

Brussels has not yet made clear how the EU27 will respond to the Chequers deal, which the government believes represents an "evolution" of its negotiating strategy.

"I had with David Davis a frank and cordial relationship, and now I will work next Monday with this negotiator appointed by Mrs May", he told AFP.

The Prime Minister faces a stormy meeting with Tory MPs and peers in Parliament on Monday evening as she tries to win support for her plan, which includes an offer to Brussels to share a "common rulebook" on goods and form a new UK-EU free trade area.

The senior ministers' resignations follow Mrs May's announcement of an agreement over the United Kingdom government's latest Brexit plan at Chequers.
