Roger Federer stunned at Wimbledon by Kevin Anderson

Roger Federer stunned at Wimbledon by Kevin Anderson”

The 20-times grand slam champion blew a third-set match point before succumbing 2-6 6-7 (5-7) 7-5 6-4 13-11 to big-serving South African Kevin Anderson in a four-hour, 14-minute quarter-final thriller on Tuesday.

Anderson's big serve and power seemed to bother Federer, who never seemed quite right.

Federer, the defending champion, has been his usual dominant self.

Top seed Federer, who was aiming for a record-equalling ninth singles title, missed a match point in the third set. But that turned out to be the least of his worries.

Even Djokovic admits his dramatic fall from grace after arriving at The All England Club in 2016 as the first man since Rod Laver in 1968 to hold all four slams simultaneously, only to rapidly relinquish them, had been mystifying.

"It's definitely helped a certain style of player, maybe the big servers", said 20-time major victor Federer.

Federer responded, quickly breaking back before taking the set in a tie-break.

Federer extended his run of consecutive sets won at Wimbledon to 32 in a 6-0 7-5 6-4 victory over Adrian Mannarino and still has not had his serve broken all tournament, although he was forced to save his first break points.

Roger Federer walks to his chair after losing to Kevin Anderson at Wimbledon on July 11. The three have lost one set between them all tournament.

The final set lasted 90 minutes, and it was captivating stuff. He won the match, 2-6, 6-7, 7-5, 6-4, 13-11.

While Anderson is known for his booming serve, it's Federer's serve that has proved impenetrable at this year's Championships - the Swiss is yet to drop serve and has held in his past 81 service games, dating back to the first set of his semi-final against Czech Tomas Berdych last year.

Not since Wayne Ferreira in 1994 had a South African man made the Wimbledon quarter-finals, but Anderson wasn't overawed by the occasion.

"I'm not quite sure what to say, I had to try my best to keep fighting", Anderson told the BBC.

"I don't know why Del Potro shouldn't think he has a great chance", Wilander said. Beating Roger Federer will be one to remember, certainly in such a close match. You need that mindset against Roger.

"I just kept saying "today is going to be your day".

The only player with a superior head-to-head record over both grand slam giants, Djokovic has warned he's finally approaching his own brilliant best after an utterly unexpected two-year major title drought.

It was Federer's earliest departure from Wimbledon since his shock second round defeat against Sergiy Stakhovsky in 2013.
