Turkey fires 18500 state employees for alleged terror links

Turkey fires 18500 state employees for alleged terror links”

Turkish government has so far suspended or dismissed more than 150,000 judges, teachers, police and civil servants since July 15 through government decrees issued as part of an ongoing state of emergency.

About 1052 199 civil servants and scientists were also fired and at least three Newspapers, the channel 12 and associations were closed.

Human rights defenders including Amnesty International have lambasted the purges as arbitrary but Turkey says they are necessary to remove the Gulen movement's infiltration of state bodies.

Turkey's state of emergency, which was declared after a coup attempt in July 2016, is set to expire on July 18 this year.

During the election campaign, pushed by his opponents' promises including his main opposition rival Muharrem Ince, Erdogan vowed to lift the state of emergency if he was re-elected.

More than 8,998 police officers and 3,077 army soldiers among public employees dismissed by emergency decree.

Cpl. Joseph Maciel of South Gate, California, was deployed with the 1st Security Force Assistance Brigade and attacked by an Afghan soldier at Tarin Kowt airfield in Uruzgan province, said Army Lt. Col. Martin O'Donnell, a military spokesman in Kabul.

The emergency has been renewed seven times and the latest period is officially due to end on July 19.

Turkey declared a state of emergency following the failed coup attempt on July 15, 2018, organized by the followers of FETÖ and its US -based leader Fethullah Gülen that resulted in the deaths of almost 250 people and more than 2,200 injuries.

Gulen, who lives in self-imposed exile in the USA, has denied any involvement in the coup, in which more than 200 people were killed.

Tens of thousands of others have been fired or suspended in the enormous purge.
