Utah delegation calls Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh 'outstanding'”

President Trump plans to nominate Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court to fill the vacancy left by retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy.

Top contenders had included federal appeals judges Raymond Kethledge, Amy Coney Barrett and Thomas Hardiman, as well as Kavanaugh, who is now a federal appellate judge in the District of Columbia.

Almost 18 months after Trump set in motion Justice Neil Gorsuch's nomination, the reality star-turned-president is more seasoned, more embittered and increasingly comfortable exerting his will over the machinery of government and his own staff. "She has made clear - as she said to the President in person two weeks ago - that she considers fully vetting Supreme Court nominees one of the most important jobs of any USA senator, and she plans to fulfill that critical duty". Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer earlier on Monday said Trump's nominee should be obligated to make his or her views clear on matters like the Roe ruling.

Donnelly, Heitkamp and Manchin - all up for re-election in November - were the only three Democratic senators who voted a year ago in favor of confirming Trump's first high-court nominee, Neil Gorsuch, who was approved in a 54-45 vote. Other Democrats who represent heavily Republican states will also be under pressure to support the nominee. He has stood against abortion, for Second Amendment rights, and against several regulations from former President Barack Obama's administration.

As promised, Trump made his pick from a list of more than two dozen potential nominees drawn up with the help from conservative legal activists at The Federalist Society and The Heritage Foundation. Liberals, meanwhile, have burned him in effigy as the unwitting mouthpiece for corporate oligarchs thanks to his majority opinion in the Citizens United case. He co-authored the Starr Report calling for Bill Clinton's impeachment in 1998 before changing his mind and arguing in 2009 that sitting presidents should not be prosecuted while in office.

Later he was part of Bush's legal team working on the 2000 Florida recount, which resulted in Bush winning the presidency. He recently voiced disagreement with a court decision allowing an undocumented teenage immigrant to get an abortion. Critics believe Kavanaugh didn't push back enough in the case, Garza v. Hargan, while supporters say it illustrates his instinct towards compromise while standing firm on conservative values. Gorsuch met with almost three-quarters of the Senate in advance of his hearings. I want to play a little clip of Senator Lindsey Graham here.

That means Kavanaugh is not a stranger to tough confirmation fights.

The Judicial Crisis Network is planning a $1.4 million ad buy in Alabama, Indiana, North Dakota and West Virginia - states with moderate Democratic senators who could be pressured to vote for Trump's nominee.

Elected officials in NY, including Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer, Sen. Judge Brett Kavanaugh is an appellate judge from Maryland who has ruled against Obamacare and abortion rights in the past. "We must do everything we can to stop this nomination". John McCain remains at home in Arizona while battling cancer during the confirmation vote.

The president said: "Judge Kavanaugh has impeccable credentials, unsurpassed qualifications and a proven commitment to equal justice under the law". He is widely respected as a fair, independent & mainstream judge. "I look forward to meeting soon with Judge Kavanaugh", said Senator Gardner. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., the majority leader, has tried to warn the president through gentle nudging that Hardiman and Kethledge would be the safest choices for confirmation.

Signaling the fight ahead on abortion rights, Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, said in a statement: "There's no way to sugarcoat it: With this nomination, the constitutional right to access safe, legal abortion in this country is on the line".
