Babies who started solids slept better

Babies who started solids slept better”

The study, which was analysed by researchers from the USA and the United Kingdom, has proposed feeding your baby solids as early as three months old will help them sleep for longer. But the findings don't mean parents should feel free to give solid food to infants younger than six months to improve their sleep, he added.

Lack, the senior author of the study and a professor and head of the Department of Pediatric Allergy at King's College London, added that insufficient "sleep can be pretty devastating for babies and their families".

The parents fill out the questionnaire online every month until their baby was 12 months old and after it, the parents filled it in every three months until their baby was three years old. One group followed standard infant feeding advice and were encouraged to exclusively breastfeed for around six months.

It's been proven that the babies from the second group, who were breastfed and were given solid food have slept for longer and have woken up less frequently - overall, their sleep problems were nearly non-existent, in comparison with those babies who were only fed with breast milk.

"Given that infant sleep directly affects parental quality of life, even a small improvement can have important benefits", says Dr. Michael Perkin, a co-author of the study from St George's, University of London.

For the latest United Kingdom research, the parents of half the children were encouraged to feed their babies solids, such as white fish or wheat, before six months, while the other half were told to stick to breast milk alone until that time. We found a small but significant increase in sleep duration and less frequent waking at night. National Health Service and National Childhood Trust seem to dispute this claim, with the latter citing a study that found no difference in total sleeping time at 9 months between infants who had solid foods introduced before and after age 6 months.

Referred as "Safe to sleep", the method also urges parents to put babies to sleep on their backs, not on their stomach until a certain age. "The well-established benefits of breast milk need to be weighed up against the potential benefits of early introduction of solid food which displaces breast milk".

She added, "However, the evidence base for the existing advice on exclusive breastfeeding is over 10 years old and is now being reviewed in the United Kingdom by the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition".

Half of the babies were then gradually given solid foods, while the other half carried on with exclusive breastmilk diets until at least six months.

"We expect to see updated recommendations on infant feeding in the not too distant future".

You should feed your baby the mashed or soft cooked fruit and vegetables. Offer your baby different types of food and it can take a lot of time to accept by the baby as the new food.

Parents of exclusively breastfed babies were more likely to perceive their babies as having sleep problems, researchers found.
