England hold their heads high despite pain of World Cup loss

England hold their heads high despite pain of World Cup loss”

"I really thought we'd see a final though".

Despite taking the lead early in the first half on Wednesday, England suffered the familiar story of World Cup heartbreak as Croatia equalised in the second half and then claimed the victor in the second period of extra time.

Kieran Trippier was an unlikely third name on the list of those who have scored for England in a World Cup semi-final, joining Sir Bobby Charlton and Gary Lineker with a glorious fifth-minute free-kick.

It was the plucky South Americans' second World Cup title, with the first coming on home soil in the inaugural edition in 1930.

Here's the moment Croatia took the lead. "Now I want to go and see what's going on in Russian Federation", said one fan, Michael Roberts, 27, as he waited for his flight.

As they entered the second half of extra time against England with the scores level, it began to look like they would need to step up to the spot again, until Mario Mandžukić scored with 11 minutes to play.

Many fans had tears in their eyes and were too upset to talk after the final whistle - but other pockets of the crowd hid their sadness to applaud the Three Lions.

The official attendance was given as 78,011.

"They'll be the best team we've played in terms of what they're capable of doing with the ball, and what their individuals are capable of, definitely", he said (via Sky Sports).

They will meet a French team which eased past Belgium 1-0 in their semi-finals, and which boasts a population difference of around 62 million people more than Croatia. If I'm honest, I don't think there are many England players who would get into this Croatian team.

He said in a video on Twitter: "Look we lost fine to a good team".

"We take it on the chin, we move on". This shows character and is what makes me proud.

He said: "What was it two crosses two goals?"

"We had our flights booked for next Monday - we booked two flights, we weren't that optimistic, we have flights tomorrow as well".

"As I know, when you work overseas, you feel your country in a different way".

"We've played our hearts out throughout the tournament. We're looking forward to the future", said Young.

"England have reason to cry because they were so close to [reaching the World Cup final], but they have also have reason to be optimistic", the Manchester United manager told RT.
