'It's terrible': Stunned Federer feeling low after Wimbledon shock”

LONDON: Kevin Anderson told South African youngsters to "stick to their dreams" and follow in his footsteps after he knocked Roger Federer out of Wimbledon on Wednesday.

Federer had a match point at 5-4 in the third set, but Kevin Anderson-the 6-foot-8 ball smasher from South Africa-saved that break point and went on to win the set.

Federer was looking fragile and when he netted on the forehand side to hand Anderson a 4-3 lead in the fourth set, the errors were becoming more problematic. Anderson held for 5-all, broke to 6-5 with a violent return victor off a 156kph second serve, then staved off three break points and closed the set with a 214kph ace. Disturbed by noises from the crowd, and a plane flying overhead, with the first break of the 5th set, Anderson made no mistake with his service game. Nerves and serves were severely tested in the afternoon sunshine, but Anderson, a 32-year-old who has cracked at such moments in the past, was the one who held firmest this time. At 11-11, Anderson broke Federer's serve once again before capping off the upset with another big right-handed serve.

Top seed Federer, 36, had not dropped a set on his way to the last eight. It rattled Federer, who blew the next match point and then double faulted on break point. I believe hard work's going to pay off, because early on maybe I didn't always work at my hardest. Djokovic last appeared in the semifinals at Wimbledon in 2015, when he won. It's just the third time he's lost a major match after being up two sets to none. It set Federer off - he remained heated by the overturn ("That one cost me the match, eventually", Federer said later) and he began jawing at the chair umpire to complain about a number of things, including how long Del Potro was taking to challenge.

Nishikori, playing in his first quarterfinal at the All England Club, was bidding to become the first Japanese man to make the Wimbledon semifinals in 85 years.

Eighth seed Anderson will play 2016 runner-up Milos Raonic or American 9th seed John Isner on Friday for a place in Sunday's final.

The next challenge for Djokovic is a quarter-final against Kei Nishikori, who he has beaten 12 times in a row since the Japanese star claimed his biggest victory in the semi-finals of the US Open in 2014.

He had been yearning for a Centre Court date, after playing as many games on Court Two as the main show court so far this tournament. After making it to the fourth round of the Australian Open, an event where he's dominated historically, Djokovic lost in the first round of several masters events, including the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open. Of course, the goal is to come back here next year.

It would be unwise to write off his chances of adding to his 20 grand slam titles in light of his three in the past 18 months but it is not going to get any easier, certainly at Wimbledon.

"Sometimes you don't feel good, and you try your best. I hope I can get a chance to fight for a trophy".
