Roger Federer Exits Wimbledon After a Nail-Biting Match Against Kevin Anderson

Roger Federer Exits Wimbledon After a Nail-Biting Match Against Kevin Anderson”

In the process, Anderson ended two impressive streaks by Federer - 34 consecutive sets won at the All England Club, tying his own record, and 85 service games here without being broken. "Beating Roger Federer here at Wimbledon will be one I remember, especially in such a close match", Anderson said.

Nishikori fought hard, but the signs of wear and tear from playing a foe of Djokovic's quality became apparent when he dropped three breaks in the fourth, decisive set, running out of steam opposite a relentless force.

Asked if he expected more from an opponent in the world's top 30, Federer said: "I think it's a tough matchup for him maybe against me".

"I think Rafa and Del Potro had to be on Centre Court", Murray told BBC.

Now the 32-year-old South African moves on to a semifinal against No. 9 John Isner of the USA or No. 13 Milos Raonic of Canada.

Roger Federer crashed out of Wimbledon after a marathon five-set shoot-out with big-serving Kevin Anderson in the quarter-finals.

Anderson, the first South African to reach the last eight since Wayne Ferreira in 1994, was steadfast though and did what no man had done at Wimbledon since last year's semi-final when he broke Federer's serve early in the second set. However, he fell once, this time in a 7-6 tiebreaker, to fall behind two sets to none.

The 6-foot-8 Anderson, who won an NCAA doubles title at IL in 2006, is from South Africa.

He saved a match point at 4-5 when Federer missed a forehand, then broke to serve for the third set.

Anderson went up 40-15 on Federer in the 24th and final game of the fifth set before closing out the match with an ace, denying Federer a shot at his ninth Wimbledon title.

Gaining in confidence, Anderson took care of Federer 6-4 in the fourth, setting up a do-or-die fifth set. Things went back-and-forth and into a tiebreak.

From there, the tall and powerful Anderson kicked on whilst Federer stalled. After earning an array of collegiate All-American honors, Anderson turned pro and worked his way up the rankings.

It marks the best women's doubles showing at a Grand Slam for the 26-year-old Dabrowski, who advanced to the quarter-finals with Xu at the 2017 U.S. Open and 2018 Australian Open.

Now, at age 32, he has reached the semifinals at Wimbledon for the first time.

Federer, 36, was on a quest for his ninth Wimbledon title and 21st Grand Slam trophy overall.

The eight-time champion was two sets up and had a match point in the third, but nearly three hours later he trudged off on the end of a seismic 2-6 6-7 (5/7) 7-5 6-4 13-11 upset.
