Trump brands Germany a "captive of Russian Federation", days before he meets Putin

Trump brands Germany a

"We're supposed to protect you against Russian Federation", he told Stoltenberg, "but they're paying billions of dollars to Russian Federation and I think that's very inappropriate". "It's about $2.8 billion and the USA pays 22 percent of that, not 90 percent".

The president made the remarks less a formal proposal, but while urging members to up their contributions and promote fair burden sharing across the organization.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel was quick to defend her country after President Trump criticized its energy deal with Russian Federation during a breakfast meeting with NATO's secretary general Wednesday.

Asked about Trump's suggestion, Stoltenberg said he'll focus on what's been agreed to. He told fellow leaders he would prefer a 4 percent target, closer to the 3.6 percent of GDP the United States spends on defense.

While NATO members increased overall defense spending in 2017, for a second consecutive year, the United States was still largely outspending all other members.

"This has gone on for many presidents".

He added: "We're protecting Germany, France and everybody. this has been going on for decades". "All #NATO allies have committed to extending this success through increased defense spending, deterrence and defense, and fighting terrorism".

Trump is reportedly considering imposing sanctions on the five European countries involved in the pipeline project. Germany's spending on defense as a percentage of GDP was on par with a handful of other North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nations at 1.24 percent, putting it at the mid-to-lower end of the pack.

"Military spending for any country", Koshagarian said, "should be determined by two things: real national security needs, and curbing waste and profit motives that drive military spending up without making us safer".

Trump kept going, saying previous American leaders have mentioned the 2 percent issue but either did not understand like he does or "didn't want to get involved".

In an interview on "Wolf" with CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Wednesday, Menendez, who is the top Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, brought up his concerns about the upcoming summit and how he views the President's attitude towards it.

Sen. Bob Corker, a Tennessee Republican, also criticized Trump's rhetoric.

"NATO and the transatlantic geographical area is only a part of what the United States military does". But at the bilateral meeting he exulted: "We have a very, very good relationship with the Chancellor".
