Trump slams 'captive' Germany at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit

Trump slams 'captive' Germany at North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit”

US President Donald Trump told North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders on Wednesday that they should increase their defence spending to 4% of their country's economic output, double the group's current goal of two percent.

Bloomberg omitted the part where Radev said that Trump spoke first and added a claim from the Bulgarian leader that the USA president left the meeting immediately after his own remarks.

Baltic leaders fearful of any repeat of Russia's annexation of Crimea called for unity as they arrived at the summit, while Slovakia's President Andrej Kiska said his country was "one of the good guys" because he was increasing defense spending.

"Fair burden sharing underpins the Alliance's cohesion, solidarity, credibility, and ability to fulfil our Article 3 and Article 5 commitments", the summit declaration said.

'We are protecting Germany, we are protecting France, we are protecting all of these countries and then numerous of the countries go out and make a pipeline deal with Russian Federation where they are paying billions of dollars into the coffers of Russian Federation.

After meeting with embattled British Prime Minister Theresa May in London and a golf weekend at a Trump-owned course in Scotland, the president travels to Helsinki for next week's meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

After a later bilateral meeting with Merkel, Trump said he brought up the nat gas pipeline, as well as military spending and trade, with the German leader.

Dr. Claudia Major, a researcher at the German Institute for International Security affairs, said that Germany, in particular, does more for the alliance than spend on its own defense, including deploying troops to Afghanistan, "and eventually, two percent is an arbitrary measurement that does not say much about efficiency and output".

Kerry, who served as the Secretary of State from 2013-17, said Trump makes public adversaries out of its friends, and turns USA adversary, who has been attacking America's democracy, into his fawned-over ally. At breakfast he had spoken of Germany as a "captive" of Russian Federation because of the two countries' energy relationship, which he labelled "inappropriate".

The Kremlin hopes to increase the dependence of Germany and Western Europe on Russian gas while depriving Ukraine and other inconvenient states of the transit fees Russia must pay to use current pipelines. "Because of that we can say that we can make our independent policies and make independent decisions".

"And the former Chancellor of Germany is the head of the pipeline company that's supplying the gas".

MARTIN: The - notably, Germany's foreign minister, Heiko Maas, had his own reply to all these criticisms from Trump. "Well they could increase it immediately, tomorrow, and have no problem", Trump said. "I think that two world wars and the Cold War taught us that we are stronger together than apart", he told the president, trying to calm tensions.

"I myself experienced that a part of Germany that was controlled by the Soviet Union, and I am very happy today that we are united in freedom as the Federal Republic of Germany", Merkel told reporters, according to the Washington Post.

US President Donald Trump pauses while speaking to members of the media on July 10.
