Van Avermaet in yellow as BMC win team time trial”

It was also a very satisfying day for Froome, the Kenyan-born Briton ignoring some booing at the start line and making up some of the valuable time he lost on Saturday's first stage. As I've said from the start, the legs are good.

Richie Porte's BMC Racing have claimed victory in the team trial on the third stage of the Tour de France.

The last team out on the course was the one with the rider in the overall lead, Bora Hansgrohe, and as they approached the second time check it was clear that Peter Sagan would be surrendering the yellow jersey, the road world champion blowing up moments later, putting it beyond doubt that the lead would change hands. To win with these guys is a great feeling.

"It was a goal to get yellow in the first week", said van Avermaet.

Overall, Froome is in 18th place, 55 seconds off the pace and still 44 behind 2017 Giro d'Italia victor Dutchman Tom Dumoulin, who with Team Sunweb only lost seven seconds to the Briton today.

Team Sunweb won the men's team time trial event at the UCI World Road Championships past year, so don't rule them out either, and Dumoulin has the chance to open up a bigger gap on the pair.

"For God sake don't sell this as a two-horse race because it's not, not this year", a source close to Bardet told AFP. "There is lots to come but we're happy with how it went today and the first two days".

Two riders abandoned on the day, Tsgabu Grmay (Trek-Segafredo) with abdominal pains and Luis Leon Sanchez (Astana) due to a heavy crash.

And the second stage looked like it would feature another duel between the veteran Sagan and new star Gaviria.

Defending champion Froome advanced to 18th to sit 55 seconds back, but Movistar's Nairo Quintana, Mikel Landa and Alejandro Valverde lost a big chunk of time.

"We were favourites and it was good to deliver".

Froome and his Sky team-mates were also left behind but they did at least stay upright, 24 hours after Froome lost 51 seconds to most of his general classification rivals thanks to a tumble in the final six kilometres.

Froome is aiming to join Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain as the only riders to win the Tour five times.

Though they regrouped quickly, with Philippe Gilbert now their yellow jersey hope, they could not make back the time they lost as they finished third on the stage.

White was more concerned for Daryl Impey, who went down hard in the late crash, and Luke Durbridge, who had his own spill five kilometres from home - perhaps complicating their approach to Monday's time trial.

He told ITV4: "We did an awesome job, the boys were unbelievable and a year ago at the team time trial at the Worlds no one suited up as the strongest and there was not much difference between everyone again today and that's exactly what you want".

By finishing second in the 35.5km team time-trial around Cholet, Team Sky did that with typical efficiency.

"It's a common misconception that a sprint day is an easy day", the Manxman said.

"So far I'm super relaxed and the team are as well".
