Wimbledon 2018 -- Juan Martin del Potro reaches quarterfinals

Wimbledon 2018 -- Juan Martin del Potro reaches quarterfinals”

Del Potro refused to surrender, breaking back in game 10 to level the score at 5-5 and he saved four set points in the tie break, climbing back from 3-6 down to steal the set 9-7 and make a huge roar of relief, ready to fight until the very last point.

"Rafa is a fighter", del Potro said.

Nadal had not lost a set prior to his first quarterfinal at the All England Club since 2011, but was taken the distance in an epic encounter between two warriors of the game.

Del Potro suffered more heartbreak after losing to Nadal in the semifinals at Roland Garros last month, his 52 unforced errors proving to be costly as the Spaniard claimed the only break in a pulsating final set.

After two-and-a-half hours, Nadal had soaked up 19 Del Potro aces and they were still a set-all and three-all, the Argentinian ahead in the serving cycle again and doing his best to grind Nadal into the grass.

Rafael Nadal reacts after beating Juan Martin del Potro in five sets. "In some ways he deserves to go through too". I tried to resist, maintaining focus.

But Del Potro ended the match flat on his face, the latest in a succession of slips, and Nadal explained that the conditions underfoot were to blame.

While you were watching the World Cup semi-final last night, and before that, while you were desperately trying to get out of work to go home and watch the World Cup semi-final, there was a day for ages playing out at Wimbledon, featuring, of course, Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal.

Nadal broke for 3-2 but had to save break points in the sixth and eighth games before securing a memorable victory.

There was a look of glee in Del Potro's sometimes sad eyes, and his lumbering between-points walk had a bit more energy to it. Nadal, struggling to get a solid second serve into hard areas, was de-fanged for long stretches.

One such chase left Nadal toppling into the arms of a stunned woman sitting in the front row as he failed to put on the breaks as he dashed after a Del Potro smash.

John Isner has reached his first Grand Slam semi-final on his 41st appearance. Only negative thing is I played nearly five hours, and I had the chance maybe to play less winning that second set.
