YouTube aims to crack down on fake news

YouTube aims to crack down on fake news”

But during breaking news events, for example, YouTube will insert text article links into user feeds in addition to videos, as a way to accommodate how long it can take to produce video content versus text articles.

YouTube is introducing the feature to the United States in the coming weeks.

The investment will be partly used to fund the working group to lead news product features for which the company is changing how its site works to "make authoritative sources readily accessible".

On Monday, Google's YouTube announced that it is committing $25 million to help support legitimate news organizations, and also detailed new features meant to flag misinformation and highlight authoritative news sources.

The platform, which has over 1.8 billion monthly active users, has been criticized for not cracking down enough on rumors and conspiracy theories that bubble up during major breaking news events. YouTube will be making it easier to find quality and breaking news as it quickly changes, and has been testing features that connect local news more efficiently to the YouTube app for TV screens. Part of that money will go toward helping news organizations build video operations.

YouTube announced new measures today to stem the spread of conspiracy theory videos and fake news on its platform, including inserting context from trustworthy sources into search results about hot topics. "Journalists often write articles first to break the news rather than produce videos", YouTube said in a blog post.

Kyncl also announced a "working group" for YouTube executives and representatives of news outlets to "help us shape the future of news on YouTube".

Currently, these sections are available in 17 countries including the US, UK, France, Italy, Japan, India, Mexico, Brazil, South Africa, Nigeria.

While the notion of promoting legitimate news sources over fake news and disinformation is a noble one, there is still a great deal of debate over which side of the divide certain publications would land on - particularly where citizen's political leanings dictate the news sources they trust. YouTube expects the number to double over the coming months. YouTube will also work with the Poynter Institute, Stanford University, Local Media Association, and the National Association for Media Literacy Education to support MediaWise to help teens develop media literacy skills.
