Foodborne illness linked to McDonald's salads in Illinois, Iowa”

The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has received confirmation of approximately 90 cases of cyclosporiasis, an intestinal illness caused by the microscopic Cyclospora parasite.

IDPH says a fourth of the people affected in the state said they ate a McDonald's salad in the days before becoming sick.

McDonald's salads are the suspected culprit of a parasite outbreak in the U.S. Officials in both states said that McDonald's is cooperating with their investigators as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Food and Drug Administration. Cases have been reported across the state with illnesses beginning in mid-May.

McDonald's has said it's chose to stop selling salads at impacted restaurants until it switches to another lettuce blend supplier. Those who are infected might also experience loss of appetite, weight loss, stomach cramps or pain, nausea, gas and fatigue.

Those with healthy immune systems should recover without treatment, the CDC said.

McDonald's said in a statement that it has voluntarily stopped selling salads at the impacted restaurants.

About a quarter of those who have fell ill say they had consumed McDonald's salads within days of suffering symptoms.

IL officials, however, said they are looking at other possible sources. The Iowa Department of Health has noted a similar increase in cases.

"Approximately one-fourth of IL cases reported eating salads from McDonald's in the days before they became ill", the health department said in a statement.

'Anyone who ate these salads since the middle of June and who developed diarrhea, especially watery diarrhea and fatigue, should see their health care provider, ' she said.

Cyclosporiasis can be treated with antibiotics.

The fast-food company also said it is removing its existing salad blend from about 3,000 of its outlets, a lot of them in the Midwest.

"McDonald's is committed to the highest standards of food safety and quality control", the company said in a statement.
