Trump falsely claims credit on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation spending”

Following US President Donald Trump's call for member states to raise defence spending to four per cent of GDP, Radev said that he had asked Nato Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg what would happen to the Transatlantic relationship "which is the backbone of NATO's military capability, if we are not reaching two per cent (of GDP) now, and no one is talking about four per cent".

At the end of the first session of a two-day summit, NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said the aim first was to reach 2 percent, but moments later Trump tweeted that allies were undercutting the USA on trade and needed to immediately boost spending.

May said the most important thing was that Trump would be going into the meeting with Putin with the 29-strong North Atlantic Treaty Organisation military alliance united behind him.

Before the summit began, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said seven nations-plus the USA -are already delivering on the commitment, up from three in 2014.

"Trump took advantage of his speaking time to return to the issue of burden sharing" during the Ukraine and Georgia meeting, a diplomatic source told AFP.

Mr Trump also said he sees his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin as a "competitor", not an "enemy", days before they meet for a high-stakes summit. Add Donald Trump as an interest to stay up to date on the latest Donald Trump news, video, and analysis from ABC News. "We should stand united against Putin's past and planned future attacks against us".

During a joint press conference with British Prime Minister Theresa May on Friday as the mass demonstrations kicked off, Trump-who was briefed on the 12 indictments earlier this week-said he plans to ask Putin about his alleged role in election meddling but doesn't expect Putin to make any admissions.

"We made a tremendous amount of progress today", he said. He suggested an accelerated timeline, saying nations would be "spending at a much faster clip".

"President Trump never at any moment, either in public or in private, threatened to withdraw from NATO", Macron said. Trump claimed that member nations owe the United States money - they don't. I think that we would have a chance at a very good relationship with Russian Federation and a very good chance, a very good relationship with President Putin.

He said the presidents would meet one on one with just their interpreters.

At NATO's 2014 summit in Wales, in the face of new Russian aggression and the annexation of Crimea, the allies had pledged to increase investments in defence and move towards investing 2 per cent of their GDP in collective security.

Trump also slammed the Nord Stream II pipeline that is set to bring gas from Russian Federation to Germany, calling it a "horrible mistake" that would give Moscow power over Berlin.

Trump claimed a personal victory at the summit after telling European allies to increase spending or lose Washington's support.

"Someone said, 'Is he an enemy?' No, he is not my enemy. And I know that's valued very highly over here and people can disagree strongly and still go out to dinner".

Stoltenberg, a former Norwegian premier who Trump said gave him "total credit" for a successful summit, told reporters: "We had a very frank and open discussion ..."
