Twitter suspends 2 accounts linked to Russian intelligence after hacking indictment”

Friday's indictment was secured by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating Moscow's interference in the election and whether President Donald Trump's campaign cooperated with the effort.

Trump, meanwhile, called Mueller's investigation "a disaster for our country".

Trump and Vladimir Putin.AP Photo/Pablo Martinez Monsivais Adding that the alleged hacking operation "was really a third-rate operation", DeSantis told Fox News that the Russians have gotten a lot of "mileage" out of it because it has been zeroed in on "by the president's political opponents, both in the Democratic Party and the press".

The move comes a day after the Justice Department announced the indictment of 12 Russian intelligence officers, accusing them of a "sustained effort" to penetrate the computers and email accounts of Democrats and the staged releases of documents to impact the election.

Rosenstein said he briefed Trump on the latest indictment earlier this week, as the president embarked on a European tour that included the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit, a visit to the United Kingdom and an upcoming meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who Trump said was not his enemy, but his "competitor".

"President Trump should cancel his meeting with Vladimir Putin until Russian Federation takes demonstrable and transparent steps to prove that they won't interfere in future elections", wrote Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer in a statement.

Both Trump and Putin repeatedly denied accusations that the Trump campaign had colluded with Russian intelligence officials to swing the election. All 12 are members of the GRU, Russia's military intelligence agency.

Putin said: "It is obvious to everyone that bilateral ties are going through a hard period".

"I have real confidence in my intelligence people, but I must tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial", Trump said.

Communications between Guccifer 2 and WikiLeaks also undercut the contention of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange that he did not obtain Democratic Party emails he published from Russian Federation.

The indictment does mention that Russians provided opposition research to a congressional candidate, although that individual is not named.

But unless some big developments quickly obliterate the images from Helsinki, it is going to be hard ever again for Trump and his allies to suggest that his administration has made America Great Again by impressing friends and enemies alike with the bristling courage and plain-spoken nationalism of Donald J. Trump. Guccifer 2.0 said it would be a "great pleasure" to help. "The person responded, "(p) retty standard". Before Friday, 20 people and three companies had been charged in the investigation.

Trump, meanwhile, has been criticized for being reluctant to speak publicly about Russian interference into the campaign.

Colvin reported from Glasgow, Scotland.
