Northwest lawmakers: Russian ‘no friend’ of U.S.; Trump missed opportunity

Northwest lawmakers: Russian ‘no friend’ of U.S.; Trump missed opportunity”

"Russian Federation is not our friend", Boozman said.

"We need our Republican colleagues to stand up for the good of this country", he said.

Newspapers around the world have reacted to Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin's performances at the Helsinki summit, and are united in their assessment of which world leader came out on top.

"The president must appreciate that Russian Federation is not our ally".

In a lengthy and fiery statement, Senator John McCain of Arizona called the Finland summit a "tragic mistake" and "one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in recent memory".

"I'm stunned that President Trump failed to take this opportunity to confront President Putin about the interference in our elections", Murkowski said in a written statement. To Russia hawks, even consideration of the proposal pointed to the success of Putin's efforts to shake the foundations of American democracy. "I was fascinated" by the idea, Mr. Trump told Hannity, but he doubts that Mueller and Democrats would be willing to cooperate.

But, yeah sure. They hosted a great World Cup.

Trump tossed the ball to Melania Trump who was sitting in the front row and said: "This is for Barron".

Trump has been reluctant to blame Russian Federation for the hacks and again Monday refused to embrace the intelligence community assessment.

Trump said Putin made a "very powerful" denial of Moscow's 2016 campaign influence operation and said he has "confidence in both parties". But the USA leader insisted that his counterpart had delivered a "powerful" denial of any Russian manipulation, and that the investigation by special counsel Robert Mueller was proving a "disaster" for the United States. We do think it's reckless to suggest at this point, as Democratic leaders did later Monday, that Russian Federation must have compromising info on our president.

House Speaker Paul Ryan R-Wisconsin said that there is "no question that Russian Federation interfered in our election and continues attempts to undermine democracy here and around the world". "The President of the United States today publicly sided with Russian Federation over our own Federal Bureau of Investigation on the subject of cyberattacks on our election campaign".

Before the summit even began, Trump blamed his own country for the deterioration in relations.

Russian Federation "remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals", Ryan said.

The Russian president said his country has never interfered and is not going to interfere in American internal affairs.

The language used by Democrats was much harsher, including accusations of "treason". He was essentially taking President Putin's argument that he didn't do it as being equal to all the intelligence gathered by American agencies.

"Of course, numerous problems remain, and we could not clear all the debris", said Putin.

Democratic representative Adam Schiff (CA-28), who's a ranking member of the House Intelligence Committee, was predictably quick to criticize.

Coats' statement was seen as an uncommonly brusque pushback by the U.S. intelligence community against the White House.

Retired spy chiefs were more direct however.

Putin repeated those denials in a Fox News interview with anchor Chris Wallace, calling allegations of election interference "utterly ridiculous".
