Trump turns tough on home turf, holds Putin responsible for poll meddling

Trump turns tough on home turf, holds Putin responsible for poll meddling”

At a news conference with Vladimir Putin, Mr Trump said he "didn't see any reason why it would be" Russian Federation that interfered in U.S. elections.

At a joint news conference with Trump in Helsinki, Putin referred to a treaty with the United States governing legal assistance each country can provide the other in criminal cases, which, according to its text, would not necessarily require that Russians be allowed to directly pose questions on American soil and vice versa.

"The President's going to meet with his team and we'll let you know when we have an announcement on that", she said.

Trump also said both countries were to blame for poor relations between the USA and Russian Federation.

"I don't see any reason why it would be", Trump said in Helsinki.

"In a key sentence in my remarks I said the word "would" instead of 'wouldn't, ' " he explained.

Putin and Trump also discussed a deal Russian Federation has with Israel to keep Iranian proxy forces - loyal to Syrian dictator Bashar al-Assad - at least 50 miles away from its border from the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights, the Post said.

In his morning tweets, Trump said he elicited a promise from Putin during their meeting to help negotiations with North Korea, but did not say how.

Trump asserted Wednesday at the White House that no other American president has been as tough on Russian Federation.

"The way he delivered his statement of retreat was classic Trump, a dual message - a ritual statement of confidence in US intelligence officials for those who insist that the president respect the nation's systems and mores, but also winks and nods to those who like Trump expressly because he's eager to smash china and topple tradition".

The Times says Trump first learned of Russia's interference January 6, 2017, two weeks before his inauguration, during a meeting in NY at Trump Tower with then-CIA Director John Brennan; James Clapper, then-director of national intelligence; then-FBI Director James Comey; and Admiral Mike Rogers, then-director of the National Security Agency.

"We believe the threat still exists, which is why we are taking steps to prevent it", White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said.

One current USA diplomat, who said he was "at a f-- loss", called the development a step back in U.S. diplomacy, according to The Daily Beast.

"You have people that said, "You should have gone up to him". Trump said Coats was doing an "excellent job", as was the Central Intelligence Agency director, Gina Haspel.

It was the second day of reversals and semantic hairsplitting in Trump's statements about Russian Federation and it only deepened the mystery of what exactly he and Putin had talked about during a 2 1/2-hour session in Finland when only their interpreters were in the room with them.

"I totally disagree", Trump said when asked former House Speaker Newt Gingrich had termed it "the most serious mistake in your presidency".

"Our relationship with Russian Federation and our positions are the same today as they were on the 15th", the official said.

Slate called Trump's Tuesday walkback "only a little less disgraceful" than Helsinki, under the headline: "Nothing Trump Says Can Be Trusted".

Earlier Wednesday, Trump took to Twitter to insist that the summit had been a success, citing the "many positive things" he expects to come from the meeting.

Trump, by contrast, has come under widespread domestic criticism about the meeting both from Democratic opponents and senior Republicans.

Montenegro has "very aggressive people", Trump said. Jeff Flake, R-Ariz., and Chris Coons, D-Del., will try to force a vote Thursday on a resolution backing the intelligence community's findings that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election and must be held accountable.

US Ambassador to NATO Kay Bailey Hutchinson and John Huntsman, US ambassador to Russian Federation, briefed NATO ambassadors of the North Atlantic Council, the principal decision-making body within NATO, about the Helsinki talks in Brussels on Tuesday.

"There was some conversation about it, but there wasn't a commitment made on behalf of the United States".
