United States rejects Putin's request to question ex-US envoy”

US President Donald Trump has invited Russian leader Vladimir Putin to visit the US in the autumn, his press secretary says.

President Trump is being increasingly vocal about his annoyance at this resistance to his diplomatic overtures, despite avoiding a war with Russian Federation seemingly being an obvious part of long-term United States strategic interests.

Leaders of so-called rebel republics in Donetsk and Luhansk held referendums in May 2014 that declared independence.

Russia's official assessment of Trump's high-stakes summit with Putin is carefully upbeat.

"I think that's an incredible offer", Trump responded in Helsinki.

"The Summit with Russian Federation was a great success, except with the real enemy of the people, the Fake News Media", Trump said on Twitter.

"OK. That's going to be special", he said, laughing.

Later that evening Trump was on CBS for an interview and said Putin was only to blame "because he's in charge of the country".

"That's part of the discussion we're having", said Sen.

Sanders said earlier on Wednesday that "the President is going to meet with his team" over the issue and "there was some conversation about it, but there wasn't a commitment made on behalf of the United States" during the Trump-Putin meeting. "In the United States, in Russian Federation, or anywhere else".

Despite the bipartisan criticism, Trump pointed blame at the media, tweeting: "The Fake News Media wants so badly to see a major confrontation with Russian Federation, even a confrontation that could lead to war". As if to underline that point, plans are already under way for a sequel - this time in Washington DC.

Mueller is investigating possible collusion between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

Dan Coats, President Donald Trump's director of national intelligence, doubled down Thursday in his criticism of the president ― specifically, Trump's apparent desire to downplay the matter of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election.

The White House had earlier said it would consider the proposal, which Mr Trump called a "tremendous" gesture.

"That's not going to happen", U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo told CBN News on Thursday.

"Certain forces are trying to disavow the results of the meeting in Helsinki", and hamper progress on what they discussed, such as limiting their nuclear arsenals or ending the war in Syria, Putin said. News' Andrea Mitchell asked Coats at the Aspen Security Forum.

At the Helsinki meeting, Trump also agreed to consider a Putin request to question the former USA ambassador to Moscow over US campaign-finance violations that critics say Trump should have dismissed outright.

Trump later said he misspoke at the news conference, mixing up "would" and "wouldn't be" when it came to describing Russia's interference in the election.

"A year and a half into his presidency, Trump's puzzling affinity for Putin has yet to be explained", Bennett wrote.

Putin told Russian diplomats Thursday that U.S.

"Nobody else did what I have done", Trump added.

Donald Trump has invited Vladimir Putin to the White House this autumn for a second get-together in a move that appeared to catch even the U.S. president's top intelligence official by surprise.

If a referendum was held in rebel areas of eastern Ukraine, "the result would be the same as in Crimea", which voted to join Russia, Igor Plotnitsky, who was then leader of the self-declared Luhansk People's Republic, told Russian state-run RIA Novosti news service in March past year.
