Valsartan Recalled for Potential Cancer Link

Valsartan Recalled for Potential Cancer Link”

NDMA is classified as a probable human carcinogen based on lab tests.

Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceutical - a major supplier of the active ingredient valsartan that it uses to make a generic blood pressure drug - raised the alarm and voluntarily suspended its supplies in the global market after detecting an impurity, N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) in the product.

Mike Scribner, a pharmacist at Collier Drug Stores, advises those patients to contact their pharmacist for advice.

Ministry of Health also has directed all to to stop using anything that contains the concerned chemical from the mentioned company.

The Provincial Pharmacovigilance Centre Punjab issued an alert asking manufacturers to review their sources of raw materials of valsartan (a formula used in the making of hypertension medicines).

In a series of pronouncements over the past week, Huahai said last Friday that it had moved to suspend supply and had begun a recall.

The FDA said patients should continue with the recalled medicine until they have a replacement as valsartan is used to treat serious medical conditions.

"The FDA is committed to maintaining our gold standard for safety and efficacy".

A Chinese pharmaceutical company has recalled its products after discovering that some batches contained a carcinogen substance.

The company supplies the ingredient to manufacturers producing some of the valsartan medicines available in the European Union, and some initial reports were that USA manufacturers were not affected.

"EMA has made this aspect of the review a priority and will update the public as soon as new information becomes available", the agency said. Solco Healthcare's information is already on the FDA's website, information from Major Pharmaceuticals can be found on its website, and early Monday evening Teva Pharmaceuticals USA released a statement with information about the recall.

The FDA said not all products containing valsartan were being recalled in the United States. It can also be unintentionally produced through certain chemical reactions and is a byproduct from some pesticide manufacturing, the making of rubber tires or fish processing.

Teva Pharmaceuticals says they have detected small amounts of "an unexpected impurity found in an active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) manufactured by Zhejiang Huahai Pharmaceutical".

The medication containing valsartan that Denise Meade is now has is not on this list, but she is still concerned she may have taken one of the recalled brands in the past.
