Testing for West Nile virus proves positive in Montgomery County”

Chatham County Mosquito Control has confirmed samples of mosquitoes collected across Chatham County have tested positive for West Nile Virus.

They are the state's first reported West Nile cases of the year.

It bites and infects birds that other mosquitos then bite and then spread the virus to people. Both the City of Fort Collins and the Town of Berthoud found Culex mosquitos in traps that tested positive for the virus. The District asks residents who find a dead bird to report it to the statewide West Nile Virus Hotline online or by calling (877) WNV-BIRD (968-2473). At this point in time there is no cure or vaccine for West Nile virus. Approximately one in 150 people who catch the virus develop symptoms such as encephalitis, or swelling of the brain, and meningitis, which is swelling of the membranes around the brain and spinal cord.

Symptoms of the virus include fever, nausea, headache and body aches within three to 14 days of the bite.

WNV is transmitted by the bite of infected mosquitoes and can cause mild to serious illness.

Dress appropriately. Wear long sleeves and long trousers (wear light-weight clothing to minimize the potential for heat-induced illnesses).

Most cases occur in the late summer and early fall.

Be sure door and window screens are tight fitting and in good fix.

Last year, two county residents tested positive for the virus, according to county officials.

Wear an effective insect repellant containing deet.

He says older people are more at risk.

She can also offer the community some peace of mind, as officials are actively searching for mosquitos and spraying.

Planes will release Trumpet EC, an EPA-registered insecticide routinely used to curb mosquito populations across the country, the news release said. Eliminate all sources of standing water on your property, including flower pots, old auto tires, rain gutters and pet bowls.
