Tiger Woods finishes 5-under to fall just short at Open”

Woods, who has three Open wins in his 14 Majors, will be a big contender on Sunday as Carnoustie Golf Links was benign and amiable with no wind and flawless weather.

Tiger Woods, who is four shots off the leaders, will tee-off at 2.25pm alongside Italian Francesco Molinari.

The American star sits level on nine under par alongside compatriots Xander Schauffele and Kevin Kisner and he is aiming for a repeat of his victory at Royal Birkdale 12 months ago, although there is a large chasing pack ready to pounce, with Tiger Woods right in the mix.

The 147th Open Championship provided all of the thrills any golf fan could ask for in a major, but when a leaderboard full of major winners started to slide, only Francesco Molinari was able to string together pars and hang on at the top.

Playing at The Open for the first time since 2015, Woods birdied six of his first 14 holes to tie for the lead, a position he held for about 20 minutes before Kevin Kisner birdied No. 3. Suddenly, a leaderboard glittering with Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy, Tommy Fleetwood, Zach Johnson and, for a while, Rickie Fowler, also had the name "Woods".

Australian Adam Scott is also at four under after a 68 left him in the hunt as the best placed Australian going into the final round. Even fellow golfers were excited for him, with Ian Poulter describing Woods joint leader as the "stuff dreams are made of". It would've been hard to make a case that the 40-somethings, Woods and Mickelson, were still credible threats at even-par, 8 strokes back with two rounds to go. His last tournament win came in 2013 and since then the battle to return to competitive golf again has one been lost more often than won.

Spieth shares lead after third round

Large crowds are following the 42-year-old Woods, who has yet to win in his latest comeback. "We're not there yet, let me try and get there first".

But just when one of the greatest sporting comebacks of all time seemed on the cards, Woods failed to pull off a risky flop shot to get out of trouble on the 11th and ran up a deflating double bogey.

Johnson, staying in the same house as Kisner, Spieth and four other Americans, hooked his approach on No. 12 and three-putted for a double bogey. "And he's like, 'I put my chips behind anything you decide, always.' And that kind of gave me that little extra boost", Spieth said. "It wasn't that bad, but it was just damp enough and cold enough that the game plan that I was trying to adapt to be aggressive and hit driver a lot, I just couldn't do it".

On a day that was flawless for low scoring, Woods let rip with his driver and tucked into the birdie buffet with his red-hot putter, briefly grabbing a share of the lead - something the American had not done at a major since the 2013 Masters.

This is the 16th time he has been in at least a share of the lead in the majors in the five years he has been playing them on a regular basis.
