California authorities responding to ‘active barricaded suspect’ at Trader Joe's, police say”

Los Angeles officials escort a woman being evacuated by emergency personnel after a gunman held hostages inside a Trader Joe's store in Los Angeles Saturday, July 21, 2018. Police believe a man involved in a standoff at the supermarket shot his grandmother and girlfriend. Police fired at the driver, shattering the store's glass doors and Kohles and others inside took cover and laid on the floor as the suspect ran into the store, he said.

Derek Anthony told NBC4 he saw the end of a auto chase: "The vehicle had heavy damage, had flat tyres and the suspect was still careening around the corner with all the police behind him, and he was shooting his gun as he came around the corner".

Events began with a shooting in the 1600 block of 32nd Street around 1:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. ET) in which an elderly woman and a young woman were victims, LAPD Officer Mike Lopez told CNN.

Los Angeles Fire Department spokeswoman Margaret Stewart said a 20-year-old female patient was transferred to a hospital in fair condition. Police said she suffered a graze wound to her head and is expected to survive.

He took hostages as scores of firefighters and police converged on the scene.

Investigators continued combing the area the day after an armed chase suspect ran into the market and held several people hostage for about three hours, starting around 3:30 p.m. Saturday.

It emerged one person was killed inside the Trader Joe's store.

Mayor Eric Garcetti congratulated police and firefighters for their work, adding: "The heroism that was shown today was second to none, and the teams that were able to respond, secure the perimeter and engage in conversation with the suspect no doubt saved lives today", he said. Among them was a police officer carrying a small child, he said.

The Los Angeles Police Department merely said she had been "struck by gunfire", and died immediately.

Officers rescued some workers and customers, while the hostage-taker released some himself. Police swarmed the area in tactical gear with guns drawn.

He could hear others around him sobbing as the man ran toward the back of the store and yelled at people, but Kohles said he never heard any more gunshots.

Los Angeles police have arrested a suspect who earlier barricaded himself in a shop with about 40 people inside.

The company said that the Silver Lake location where the tragic incident took place will remain closed until further notice.

President Donald Trump tweeted that federal law enforcement was assisting LAPD with the incident and said he was watching the "possible hostage situation very closely". "There was a lot of shots fired". Later, a man was seen being led away from the store in handcuffs.

Witness Devin Field said it appeared traffic prevented the suspect from escaping police when he crashed in front of the store.
