Canada's Bouchard retires from Swiss Open semifinal against Cornet with injury”

Luxembourg's Minella, 32, came from a set down to beat Marketa Vondrousova 4-6, 6-2, 6-2 and reach her first career singles final.

Cornet edged a first set which included five breaks of serve and rallied from 5-3 down in the second to take the honours after Minella had saved two match points to force a tie-break.

Sevastova raced away with the second set to seal victory in 93 minutes. She does own one WTA 125K singles title, having triumphed at the inaugural edition of the Croatia Bol Open two years ago. She was playing fantastic.

While Buzarnescu progressed at the expense of Yafan Wang, compatriot Cirstea lost out to top seed Anastasija Sevastova despite winning the first set of their quarter-final meeting. Cornet saved four set points in the seventh game, and Bouchard saved three in the 10th.

Bouchard won 10 of the last 11 games to progress in the tournament, then found out afterwards she has received a wild card for the Rogers Cup in Montreal next month. "I really enjoy my time on court now, I realise that I could be home (had she been banned) and not able to play".

"Eugenie is now showing great things and we hope that she can keep her momentum going in Montreal", said tournament director Eugene Lapierre.

The world no. 44 managed not to drop a set all week in Switzerland as she bounced back perfectly from a disappointing first round exit at Wimbledon earlier this month.

Following the match, Bouchard said "someone else can carry the burden of Canada" citing that the loss affected her confidence level.
