Scores Of Chinese Children May Have Been Injected With Faulty Vaccines

Scores Of Chinese Children May Have Been Injected With Faulty Vaccines”

The China Food and Drug Administration announced late Sunday that it had ordered all production stopped at Changchun Changsheng, a subsidiary of one of the country's largest vaccine makers.

"We don't know who we can believe in", Huo Xiaoling said. "A firm determination should be mustered to improve the country's vaccine management system, and utmost efforts should be made to protect the people's interests, social security and stability", he said.

While there have been no known reports of people being harmed by the vaccine, the regulator ordered Changsheng to halt production and recall the product after the scandal emerged earlier this month.

It is also a setback for the country given it is looking to play a bigger role globally in the production and export of vaccines and other medicines.

"Defective vaccines are like child abuse and trafficking - it touches on the most sensitive, vulnerable part of the public's hearts", wrote Xi Po, a columnist for The Paper, a popular online news outlet backed by the Shanghai government.

Another company Wuhan Institute of Biological Products was also implicated in the DPT vaccine issue.

Chinese premier Li Keqiang released a statement on the government's website suggesting that the vaccine-maker had "crossed a moral line".

The CFDA had revoked the company's drug GMP certificate - an essential licence for production - following its serious violations of relevant law and regulations, and demanded a recall of unused vaccines. According to the report, 252,600 vaccines in the batch had been sold to disease control and prevention centers throughout east China's Shandong Province.

China's pharmaceutical industry has been plagued with such scandals, with another company Wuhan Institute of Biological Products also being implicated in the DPT vaccine issue previous year and the police busting a gang for selling around $90 million worth of illegal vaccines on the black market in 2016.

There have no reports of injuries from the vaccine, but the news led to a wave of criticism on social media. The drugmaker's chairwoman and four high-ranking managers are now under criminal investigation.

"We will resolutely crack down on illegal and criminal acts that endanger the safety of peoples' lives, resolutely punish lawbreakers according to the law, and resolutely and severely criticize dereliction of duty in supervision", he said. An apology has been issued by the company, but that will not so easily turn around the fall in its share price.

The authorities condemned the Changsheng Biotech to pay 3.4 million yuan ($ 502,200).

The state-run Global Times newspaper questioned in an editorial Monday how suspect vaccines were still being produced following the harsh lessons of the past.

Another state media publication, China Daily, said in an editorial the same day transparency was needed if the public was going to be satisfied.

Indeed, the current allegations are being likened to the 2008 milk powder scandal, which saw six babies die and 54,000 hospitalised.

This function is also available in other Alibaba-developed applications such as e-commerce platforms Taobao and T-mall and AliHealth.

China's newest product safety scare burst onto the public consciousness when an obscure essay alleging corruption in the pharmaceutical industry become an internet sensation, exposing widespread anger and distrust after a string of scandals.
