Tokyo 2020 organisers feel the heat two years out from Games”

The Japan Meteorological Agency reported temperatures to be close to 12 degrees hotter than the country's average as temperatures rose to 105.98F in Kumagaya, which is reportedly Japan's highest temperature ever on record. The morning low in Seoul was 29.2 degrees, the highest-ever in the country's capital, according to South Korea's weather agency.

Thousands more have sought hospital treatment for heat-related conditions over the past two weeks.

Ten people have died in South Korea of heatstroke and other heat-related causes this summer, seven of them last week, the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said yesterday.

Japan's meteorological agency told people to drink sufficient water to prevent heat exhaustion.

The current heatwave being the hottest on record has raised some concerns about the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

Meanwhile rescuers in Tokyo responded to more than 3,000 emergency calls on Friday, breaking the record of 2,900 set the previous day.

Meteorologists say the extremely high temperatures will continue for the near future.

The soaring temperatures have also raised questions over whether it was a good idea to stage the 2020 Olympics in the city in July and August with temperatures expected to exceed 35 C (95 F).

The authorities have advised that people should stay inside and stay where air con is available.

"We will prepare concrete measures after examining the results of test events due to be held in July 2019", a games spokesperson said, according to the Guardian.

Koike said that "the weather recently in Japan is like being in a sauna". Heat waves are becoming more common in many parts of the world and already, a third of the planet's population is living in an area where the daily temperatures are considered lethal more than 20 days a year.

And people have been warned to brace for more scorching weather that threatens to last until the end of the month.

At the same time, with several hundred people being killed by recent floods and landslides in Western Japan and Southwestern Japan, then the nation faces severe problems.
