US President Donald Trump threatens to strip critics of security clearances”

US President Donald Trump plans to revoke security clearances for ex-CIA Director John Brennan and other Obama-era critics of his administration.

US President Donald Trump is considering revoking the security clearances of six former top national security officials who have been critical of his administration, a move that opponents and experts say would be an unprecedented politicisation of the clearance process.

Paul said Monday he asked Trump to revoke former Central Intelligence Agency director John Brennan's security clearance, in particular, after Brennan criticized Trump's performance at the meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Heksinki.

Sanders on Monday also named former FBI Director James Comey and former Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, who do not have clearances.

Asked by reporters if this was a violation of the officials' First Amendment rights, Sanders disagreed. He added, "This is something that's in the purview of the executive branch, I think some of these people have lost their security clearances, some people keep their clearance that's something the executive branch deals with, that's not really in our purview". "The security clearance has nothing to do with how I or any others feel about the president and I don't get briefings, I don't have access to any classified information". "This is a kind of petty way of retribution I suppose for speaking out against the president", Clapper said.

Many former U.S. officials retain their security clearances after they leave government service because they continue to advise their former agencies or because it is a condition of employment as government contractors or consultants.

Clapper, who found a new home at CNN after serving as Obama's director of national intelligence (2010-2017), was far more circumspect in describing the summit, but he still said he was "very nervous" that Trump may have given away USA secrets "either at that meeting in Helsinki or in their earlier encounters". And it's a very sad commentary.

Hayden also brushed it off, writing on Twitter: "I dont [sic] go back for classified briefings. Won't have any effect on what I say or write", he tweeted.

Rice was former President Barack Obama's national security adviser.

A spokeswoman for McCabe, Melissa Schwartz, wrote on Twitter his security clearance was deactivated when he was terminated, according to what they were told was Federal Bureau of Investigation policy. He said that Russian Federation "did meddle with our elections" and that he would consider further sanctions against Moscow. Ryan said he hopes Trump will stress to Putin that Russian Federation can not interfere in USA affairs.

As for whether Trump has the authority to do what Sanders suggested, Aftergood called it "a disputed question". "And we're exploring what those options are and what that looks like", Sanders said.
