GOP lawmakers introduce articles of impeachment against Rod Rosenstein

GOP lawmakers introduce articles of impeachment against Rod Rosenstein”

They also allege Rosenstien has "repeatedly failed to produce documents" requested by the House Judiciary Committee and House Oversight and Government Reform Committee that are investigating FBI and DOJ decision-making during the 2016 presidential election, The Hill reported.

"The DOJ is keeping information from Congress", Jordan said, referring to the Department of Justice.

Jordan said "Enough is enough" and that "It's time to hold Mr. Rosenstein accountable for blocking Congress's constitutional oversight role".

A Justice Department official said the agency had no comment.

The articles read: "As such, his conduct in authorising the FISA surveillance at issue in the joint congressional investigation makes him a fact witness central to the ongoing investigation of potential FISA abuse".

It is highly unusual, if not unprecedented, for lawmakers to demand documents that are part of an ongoing criminal investigation.

The articles represent an escalation of attacks on the Justice Department. Rosenstein, along with FBI Director Christopher Wray, faced dozens of angry Republicans at a House hearing last month.

Meadows and Jordan profess to have reached the end of their patience in a meeting with DoJ folk today that other Republican Members present seemed to find satisfactory.

Rosenstein is accused violating Congressional subpoenas by withholding requested documents pertaining to Mueller's ongoing investigation and for allegedly abusing the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, through which warrants against Trump campaign aide Carter Page were issued previous year. They're angry that the Justice Department hasn't agreed to appoint a second special counsel to investigate the first, in Mueller. Gowdy, who is opposed to trying to impeach Rosenstein, told reporters afterward that he thought the meeting had been productive "because we're making progress towards compliance". Nine other members of the House Freedom Caucus joined them. It would require a vote in favor from a majority of the House and two-thirds of the Senate. Rosenstein was responsible for writing the memo outlining the scope of special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation because Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself.

So far, the special counsel has charged 32 people and three companies.

Democratic Reps. Jerrold Nadler of New York, Elijah Cummings of Maryland and Adam Schiff of California said Rosenstein "stands as one of the few restraints against the overreaches of the president and his allies in Congress".
