High risk of West Nile virus identified in parts of Kansas

High risk of West Nile virus identified in parts of Kansas”

The Mississippi State Department of Health says the case is in Pearl River County.

Paul Byers says the state is now in peak WNV season, which runs through September.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, mosquito samplings in the following municipalities in Montgomery County tested positive for West Nile virus: Collegeville; Norristown; Upper Merion; Upper Providence; Whitpain; Worcester.

More mosquitoes are testing positive for West Nile Virus in parts of Elk Grove and south Sacramento.

Steps to avoid contracting West Nile include using insect repellent with DEET, wearing long-sleeved, light coloured shirts, trousers and a hat while doing activities outdoors, or staying inside at dawn and dusk when mosquitoes are most active.

This is the first pool of mosquitoes to test positive this year in Kankakee County. Less than 1% of people infected with the virus get seriously ill with symptoms that include high fever, muscle weakness, stiff neck, disorientation, mental confusion, tremors, confusion, paralysis, and coma. "Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant in removing standing water on their property to eliminate mosquito breeding areas".

In rare instances, West Nile virus can be fatal. These symptoms generally appear two to 14 days following the bite of an infected mosquito. Individuals older than 60 have the greatest risk of developing severe disease. Routine spraying of insecticide will also continue throughout the state. However most people make a full recovery. Always follow the package directions when using repellents.

Keeping window and door screens in good fix. "It is expected that there may be an increase in the number of pools, increases in infection rates and possible human infections", said the Saskatchewan Health Authority in an official statement.
