All-star line-up: Blood moon eclipse and a Mars fly-by

All-star line-up: Blood moon eclipse and a Mars fly-by”

A total eclipse of the Moon will occur on Friday 27 July 2018.

Friday night's lunar eclipse will be more than 20 minutes longer than the last one, which occurred earlier this year on January 31. "About an hour later, the partial phase will begin at 2.24am when the moon begins to be covered by the dark Earth's shadow, the Umbra", he said.

If you were standing on the moon at the time of the eclipse, the Earth would look like a black disk outlined in glowing red.

"It's safe to say the viewing across Australia will generally be pretty good; most of the capital cities will be able to see something", Ms Sturrock told AAP. For four hours, it will be partly in the Earth's shadow.

"In the middle of a lunar eclipse it can look as if a red planet has taken up residence near the Earth - they are both eerie and lovely and I'll certainly be looking out for it!" Since the moon will be at its farthest point from earth, it will take more time to pass through earth's shadow.

This phenomenon could be explained by the elliptical or oval-shaped orbits that Earth and Mars followed around the Sun.

The full moon will move into the shadow of the Earth on Friday evening before it rises, causing it to appear dramatically dimmed, lit faintly by sunlight that has filtered through the Earth's atmosphere.

Why is it called Blood Moon? South-eastern observers will be able to see the eclipse for somewhat longer than north-western ones.

The next total lunar eclipse will take place on Jan 21, 2019, but it won't be visible from Singapore as it will happen during daytime.

Global News will be live-streaming the eclipse for viewers around the world beginning at 3 p.m.

Before we had explanations before what causes the moon to appear red, ancient cultures often feared the worst.

Mars is reaching its opposition, when it's in alignment on the opposite side of the Earth and the sun. It will begin when the full moon enters the Earth's shadow (Penumbra) at 1.14am on July 28.

While other colors in the spectrum are blocked and scattered by the Earth's atmosphere, red light tends to make it through easier. This light gives the Earth's natural satellite a dramatically colourful appearance - from bright orange to blood red. As an extra gift, Mars will also be at its brightest, accounting for two red lights in the sky.

The celestial events have been confirmed by the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA) Abuja and the United States National Aeronautic Space Agency (NASA).

Both the moon and Mars will be visible to the naked eye (although binoculars might add to the occasion), with the moon rising at 8.50pm in London.
