This is what to expect from Friday's 'blood moon'

This is what to expect from Friday's 'blood moon'”

The lunar eclipse will last for 1 hour and 43 minutes. The partial eclipse will begin at 10.24pm.

The lunar eclipse will look like a dark disc slowly moving across the moon's face before the orb starts to glow red from refracted sunlight.

During an eclipse, most of the light from the Sun is blocked by the Earth as the moon travels through the Earth's shadow.

The next total lunar eclipse will occur on December 31, 2028. It will also be seen perfectly in Africa and in Asia, and partly in Australia and in South America. It'll come a couple of days later, when the not-quite-circular orbits of Mars and Earth have their closest encounter, known as perigee.

Even though the Earth will be lined up directly between the moon and the sun, the moon will not be blacked out completely.

Our neighbouring planet will appear unusually large and bright, a mere 57.7 million kilometres (35.9 million miles) from Earth on its elliptical orbit around the sun. From 1:15am to 2:43am, the moon will be in the middle of the Earth's shadow and will appear reddish in colour. This is an eclipse of the moon. There will be a total lunar eclipse on 7, September 2025, according to NASA.

For those in areas from Whanganui to Wellington, there would be just a slim chance of glimpsing the totally-eclipsed moon as the Sun peeked above the horizon. A lunar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly behind Earth and into its shadow.

Galloway Forest Dark Sky Park, Sark Dark Sky Island and Exmoor Dark Sky Reserve have all been recognised for their low level of light pollution as the best spots in Britain to catch the rare blood moon. In Portugal, the moon will rise at round 8.45pm tomorrow evening, followed shortly afterwards by the sunset. But the bending (refraction) of the rays of light caused by our atmosphere makes it feasible to see both the eclipsed Moon and the Sun at the same time - so long as you are in the right place.

Why is it called Blood Moon? The reason as explained is the scattering of indirect sunlight by the Earth's atmosphere. A lunar eclipse can last for a few hours.

Where can I watch Chandra Grahan or Lunar Eclipse Online/ Live Stream?

How does a chandra grahan occur?

No. Unlike solar eclipses, lunar eclipses can be watched with the naked eye. A binocular, however, will give a better view of the spectacular celestial event.

The eclipse will be visible in its entirety from the Indian Ocean and surrounding countries, from India to the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The Javascript Lunar Eclipse Explorer was developed by Chris O'Byrne and Fred Espenak. India will not be able to witness that eclipse. And what about other types of eclipses?

Sadly, people in the United Kingdom won't be able to see the start of the lunar eclipse.
