USA won't see upcoming lunar eclipse”

Hazarry said the moon will be completely red for one hour 43 minutes during total phase from 3.30am, making the phenomenon the longest total lunar eclipse of the 21st Century.

Friday's total lunar eclipse will be visible across large parts across Africa, Australia, Asia, Europe, and South America.

The total eclipse will last one hour, 42 minutes and 57 seconds, with a partial eclipse before and after.

Also in the celestial mix, Mars will be in opposition on Friday - meaning it and the sun will be on opposite sides of Earth on the same day as the total lunar eclipse.

According to NASA, the US will have to wait until July 2020 to witness its next lunar eclipse.

You could also get arty and see if you can catch the moon's reflection in, for instance, a window pane.

What time does the lunar eclipse start?

Do note that the time of the maximum eclipse is 1.51 am, so if you want to see the blood moon in full glory try to stay awake till then.

A total lunar eclipse happens when Earth takes position in a straight line between the moon and sun, blotting out the direct sunlight that normally makes our satellite glow whitish-yellow. A sky enthusiast from Chennai, Eashwar Mathur said, "It's going to be fun since it's a blood moon and also the longest eclipse".

A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun, the Earth and the Moon are perfectly aligned or when the Earth comes in between the Sun and the Moon and covers the Moon with its shadow. In Auckland the eclipse is still partial (i.e. totality is yet to begin) as the Moon disappears below the horizon. This occurs at the same time that it will reach one of its closest points to the Earth, about 35.9 million miles away.

The entire United States won't be able to see a full lunar eclipse again until January. The brighter Mars will remain very close to the eclipsed Moon in the sky on July 27-28 and can be spotted very easily with the naked eye, the statement said.

"What we're seeing is essentially all the sunrises and sunsets on the Earth, dramatically projected onto the surface of the moon", Australian National University astronomer Brad Tucker told AAP. It will appear like a bright star, before fading from sight a few minutes later.

NASA, meanwhile, has called out social media hoaxers claiming that Mars will appear as big as the moon during the eclipse.

Neil Mahrer, from Jersey Astronomy Club, said: 'What we are doing is taking some telescopes and binoculars to the south-east coast as it will not be that visible from our usual place at Les Creux, ' he said.
