Ghana to experience longest blood moon on July 27

Ghana to experience longest blood moon on July 27”

It won't be visible in the US, but can be seen in parts of Africa, the Middle East, Europe, South America, Australia and Asia - depending on the weather.

Lunar eclipses occur from two to four times a year, but not all of them are visible.

The July 27/28, 2018 total lunar eclipse is the 17th total lunar eclipse since 2001, the beginning of this century, which will see 85 total lunar eclipses. This will make the Red Planet appear slightly larger, but most notably brighter in the sky.

Hundreds of people watched at a fort overlooking the iconic Copacabana beach and Sugarloaf Mountain. Astronomers are expecting the blood moon to last one hour and 43 minutes. Stay with us to witness the rare phenomenon of the 21st century as we show the LIVE streaming of Chandra Grahan or Lunar Eclipse 2018.

Interestingly, some people feel that the longest lunar eclipse has its own disadvantages.

A Micro Full Moon also takes longer to move across the Earth's shadow compared to a Full Moon that is eclipsed closer to the Earth.

"It's called a blood Moon because the light from the Sun goes through the Earth's atmosphere on its way to the Moon, and the Earth's atmosphere turns it red in the same way that when the sun goes down it goes red", he said. Mars is also at its closest approach to Earth this week since 2003, making it appear bigger and brighter.

The Mahila Seva Samaj School, in association with Aryabhata Planetarium, will be setting up a high-end telescope in the playground to view the spectacular blood moon.

Unlike with a solar eclipse, viewers do not need protective eye gear to observe the rare display. Nearly two weeks after, on August 11, 2018, another partial solar eclipse will take place.

Before we had explanations before what causes the moon to appear red, ancient cultures often feared the worst.

"The moon will remain in a very faint penumbral shadow for about an hour after that, but this is typically too light a shadow for the naked eye to notice the difference between that and the full moon that follows".

The colour of the moon is affected by the light from the sun's movements skimming through the Earth's atmosphere and continuing up to space about 350,000 kilometres away.

Given the moon will be at its furthest distance from Earth, Professor David Coward from the University of Western Australia is forecasting a particularly dramatic lunar eclipse for those in the east.

"Such long duration of total lunar eclipses had occurred on July 16, 2000 for a totality duration of one hour 46 minutes and another on June 15, 2011 for a totality duration of one hour 40 minutes".
