Lunar Eclipse 2018: How to watch the Blood Moon eclipse today?

Lunar Eclipse 2018: How to watch the Blood Moon eclipse today?”

SKYGAZERS and lunar lovers will be provided with a plethora of treats tonight (Friday 27 July) as the longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century takes place, as well as Mars shining the brightest it has been for a number of years.

Interestingly, some people feel that the longest lunar eclipse has its own disadvantages.

According to Hindu beliefs, celestial bodies like the sun and moon emit negative energy during an eclipse and so some temples in India were closed to minimize any disturbance.

So where can you see the total lunar eclipse?

While Mars is visible in the night sky nearly all year round, it can get extremely bright every few years.

In Germany, sky gazers will have a chance to see the Friday's "blood moon" at approximately 22:22 hours local time (20:22 UTC) and clear skies are expected for much of the country, except eastern and southeastern Germany. This will make the Red Planet appear slightly larger, but most notably brighter in the sky.

Billions of people across the world today are eyeing the sky tonight to witness one of the rarest yet interesting, picturesque, spectacle celestial the total lunar eclipse.

Where can you see the blood moon in July 2018?

During the eclipse, the moon will look red, which is also referred to as a "blood moon".

At 7.13pm South African time, the moon will start moving into the penumbral (partial) shadow of the earth. For those unaware, the eclipse will begin at 11:30pm IST on July 27 2018.

If that doesn't resolve your FOMO, be patient: North Americans will be able to view a lunar eclipse of their own on January 21, 2019.

Because blue and violet wavelengths are scattered more than red and orange ones, more of the red wavelengths reach the moon, making the moon appear red. The partial eclipse will start again around 3:49 am. Sunlight passing through Earth's atmosphere will light the moon in a dramatic fashion, turning it red.

If you are lucky, you may be able to catch some shooting stars associated with the Perseids, an annual meteor shower, while the Moon is totally eclipsed.

When the moon moves into the conical shadow of the earth, it goes from being illuminated by the sun to being dark.

NASA, meanwhile, has called out social media hoaxers claiming that Mars will appear as big as the moon during the eclipse.

Amateur astronomers in the southern hemisphere are best-placed to witness the rare sight, especially in southern Africa, Australia, South Asia and Madagascar, though it will also be partly visible in Europe and South America.
